The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Surf Patrols this weekend are: Saturday 6/03/10 : Peter Bootes’ Patrol 1 from 1:00 pm –4:00pm. Sunday 7/03/10 : Dominic Hides’ Patrol 5 from 9:00am--12:30 pm and Frank Davey’s Patrol 6 from 12:30pm—4:00pm. Active members who are unavailable for their patrols should endeavour to contact a replacement, preferably holding the same award, and please contact your Patrol Captain. Club Captain, Megan Quarmby, advises that all Patrol radio dialogue should be prefaced with ‘Pambula” to avoid possible confusion.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Nippers activities were Tsunamied off last Sunday, which curtailed any practice for this Sunday’s carnival. However, all Nippers are reminded to be at Narooma SLSC by 8:00am to be ready for the March Past start at 8:30 am, sharp. Parents and nippers are advised that the Juvenile teams’ event is now the Buchanan Relay, which involves the U8s and replaces the Board Rescue for this age group. The calendar shows us that there are only four Sundays until the season’s end. On consecutive Sundays we have the Narooma Carnival, Wambiri Development Camp, Nippers at PSLSC, and finally, on 28 March, the Brats versus Adults followed by the Nippers AGM, then the Nippers Presentation and a Pizza lunch. The Senior Branch Championship Carnival will also be held at the PSLSC on that day.

Popular Pambula SLSC cadet, Megan Warnock, has been nominated by the Branch, along with Tathra’s Matt Therris, as the FSC Branch representatives at this year’s 15-17 Youth Opportunity Makers Workshop to be held at Port Hacking on the 12-15th April.

The PSLSC Special Nippers and Cadets got off to a good start on Saturday with the presentation of a “G” Board to the group from CWA representative, Margaret Gardner. This piece of equipment is ideal for the group as it can be used by a Nipper and carer in tandem. A big thank you to the Ladies of the CWA for their most generous donation. The Special Nippers Programme is held each Saturday at the PSLSC from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, and continues through to Easter. Active members are encouraged to attend, if possible, as this is a one on one programme, and there is a lengthy queue of candidates waiting to join.

Congratulations to Will, David, Rod, Nick, Nathan, Annie, Kim, Georgia, Alex, Ben and Lewis, who successfully completed their Bronze Medallion last Sunday, and whom we welcome to the world of Surf Lifesaving. All these new active members have been placed in patrols and some will be in action on the weekend. CTO, Michele Bootes, would like to thank prospective trainers, Danny Hayes, Kerry Bourke, Malcom Skitt, Michele Miller, Murray Blackburn Smith, Joe Thorpe, David Prowse, Steve Hodgson and Karen Griffiths, along with current T&A members, Megan and Frank, for assisting with the course. Three more candidates will complete the course next Sunday. Congratulations to Nigel Ayling, Simon Byrne and Chris Ryan who completed the Advance Emergency Care and Basic Beach Management courses at Broulee last Sunday. This is their last step towards gaining their RWC award.

Michele is offering a Senior First Aid course in March and a Defibrillation course in April. Following the 30th of June the new ARTC (Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate), which includes suction, will replace the old ARC. Prior to this, the final ARC course will be held towards the end of March. For further information please contact Michele at fsceducation@bigpond.com .

PSLSC First Aid Officer, Karen Griffiths advises that she has posted Hep. B. immunisation information on the First Aid room and Patrol room notice boards.

PSLSC members are reminded that the 2010 Relay for Life will be held at the Pambula Beach Sporting Complex on the 13th and 14th of March. PSLSC has entered a team. Please contact PSLSC Relay co-ordinator, Ken Carman, for further information.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Nippers had another fun morning last Sunday morning at their Nipper activities. Again the sea conditions were challenging, with heavy chop, which tested the skills of the young lifesavers. All ages were put through the beach events and, of course, John Liston enthralled his young charges with all things safety, first aid and surf awarness. Thanks to our nippers, parents, Age Managers and official for contributing to another great day. Steve Skeers and his committee have done a marvellous job in promoting the junior carnivals as a social as well as a competitive event, and consequentially the PSLSC has an increasing number of nippers experiencing the fun of the carnivals. Steve is looking forward to having another strong representation of competitors at the final Junior Carnival at Narooma on 7 March. The team event will be the Board Rescue. Those candidates from last year, who would like to return to Wambiri as leaders this year, should contact Frank Davey at Nippers or phone 64956509.

Senior Members and Cadets made the trek to Moruya for the second senior carnival last Sunday. Strong sea conditions contributed some tough competition, with the board riders having the best of the day. The final Senior Carnival, which will be the Branch Championship Carnival, will be held at Pambula Beach on 28 March.

The PSLSC Special Nippers were out and about again last Saturday, and at the completion of the beach events, had a grand time body surfing and boogie boarding. Again the Special Cadets lined up to be the markers in an exciting series of wade races. We welcomed back Jake and Damon who both showed a lot of zip on their return. Thanks to Miss Quarmby for running the show in Michele’s absence. Michele advises that the Special Nippers Programme is on each Saturday at the PSLSC from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, and continues through to Easter. Active members are encouraged to attend, if possible, as this is a one on one programme, and there is a lengthy queue of candidates waiting to join.

Those interested in completing the Advanced Resuscitation Course should contact Michele as soon as possible. We aim to conduct the course in early March. Peter Bootes and Nigel Ayling have begun the theory sections required for IRB Crew and Drivers. Active members who are no longer using their IRB manuals should return them to the PSLSC Patrol Room as soon as possible. Several club members travelled to Broulee last Saturday to complete the Advanced Emergency Care and Basic Beach Management Courses. The next Senior First Aid class is expected to run early March. Cost to financial members is $65, non members $140. This course is nationally recognised qualification which remains current for 3 years. Please contact Michele at fsceducation@bigpond.com

PSLSC Relay co-ordinator, Ken Carman, should be contacted for further information.

All club members offer their condolences to popular club Treasurer, Pam Hughes, on the death of her father, in the Riverina, recently.

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Surf Patrols this weekend are : Saturday 13/02/10 : Greg Shaw’s Patrol 8 from 1:00 pm –5:00pm. Sunday 14/02/10 : Simon Byrne’s Patrol 2 from 9:00am--1:00 pm and Andrew Holt’s Patrol 7 from 1:00pm—5:00pm. Active members who are unavailable for their patrols should endeavour to contact a replacement, preferably holding the same awards, and please also contact your Patrol Captain. Club Captain, Megan Quarmby advises all patrolling members to be most prudent in the general use of radios during patrols.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Nippers went through their paces again last Sunday, many in preparation for this Sunday’s carnival at Bermagui, and many for the fun and physical activity. The ocean was challenging to say the least, which kept the water safety people on their toes, and the water safety officer as well. The beach events were a welcome relief from the water activities and, in John Liston’s absence, a couple of the groups were able to inspect the club’s new Jet Ski which was combined with a trip to the patrol tower to see the lifesavers at work in that area. Thanks to the water safety personnel, Age managers, cooks and all who contributed to a most successful morning. The dates for the Wambiri Development and Leadership Camp this season have been confirmed as 19-20-21 March. Those candidates from last year, who would like to return as leaders, should contact Frank Davey. Nippers President, Steve Skeers, advises that the Brats verses Adults wind up day on Sunday 28 March will also include the Nippers seasonal Presentations which, this year, will be followed by the Nippers AGM. Nipper parents who are interested in taking up an administrative position should contact Steve on Sundays. The Junior Carnival at Bermagui this Sunday, 14 February, will begin at 8:30 am with the March Past and all competitors are requested to be at the Bermagui Beach at 8:00 am. For Nippers who are a little tentative regarding carnival participation, Bermagui is the ideal beach to start along the path to carnival competition. Because of Sunday’s carnival, there will be no Nippers activities at PSLSC this Sunday.

The PSLSC Special Nippers programme got away to a good start last Saturday for its ninth season. A dozen of our regular Nippers and Cadets were on hand to enjoy an active hour or so at the beach, under the guidance and care of our active members. As usual, all activities proved popular and it was pleasing to see a couple of the senior cadets step up to assist with the wade race. Co-ordinator, Michele Bootes, advises that the Special Nippers Programme is on each Saturday at the PSLSC from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, and continues through to Easter. Active members are encouraged to attend, if possible, as this is a one on one programme, and there is a lengthy queue of candidates waiting to join.

The PSLSC Chief Training Officer, Michele Bootes, advises that Tony Shaw is prepared to run an Advanced Resuscitation Course in February or March which will be open to all PSLSC members. Patrol Captains should encourage their patrol members to contact Michele to enroll in this course. All active members who haven’t yet attained their IRB Crew Certificate should contact Michele or IRB Captain, Nigel Ayling as soon as possible, with the nights they can attend, to enable this course to get under way. Active members who are no longer using their IRB manuals should return them to the PSLSC Patrol Room as soon as possible.

A Memorial for Heather Wait, who died recently, will be held at the PSLSC this Saturday 13 February from 2:00 pm. Heather is the mother of active members Wendy Wait and Kerryn Granger and, with her husband David, was a strong supporter of the PSLSC for many years.

Sponsors of the Week are McDonalds in Merimbula and Pyramid Power in South Pambula.

Congratulations to the PSLSC boat crews who took part in the Navy George Bass Surfboat Marathon. The Ladies Crew and the Men’s Vets Crew both rowed well throughout, and completed the seven day race creditably, as did our paddlers in the Dial Before You Dig Ski Event. Thanks to all the support crew who attended to their tasks so ably and to the beach crew who did such a great job on Friday dispersing of the ocean and road traffic, and feeding the throng.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Club’s Surf Patrols on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and Public Holidays at Pambula Beach will continue, with varying hours, until Anzac Day 2010. This weekend Frank Davey’s Patrol 6 will be on duty on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm. On Sunday Peter Bootes’ Patrol 2 will be on duty from 9:00 am until 1:00pm, and Dominic Hides’ Patrol 5 will complete the day with the 1:00pm ‘till 5:00pm shift. Please swim between the flags.

Last weekend Broulee SLSC hosted the first of the FSC Branch double carnivals, which the PSLSC Senior and Junior competitors attended. On Saturday afternoon the seniors took to the water for their Teams Carnival. In slight sea conditions, the boats were the first of the events, which produced some fine rowing, exciting races and close finishes. The PSLSC Ladies “A” and “B” crews finished first and second following the round of three heats and the PSLSC Men’s Vets crew finished a credible third to the strong Broulee combinations. The Iron person, ski, board and swim team events followed, with the Hay and Prowse families showing the way for the PSLSC in an afternoon of absorbing competition.

On Sunday morning it was the Nippers turn to show their wares. The March Past got the carnival away, close to time, with a lot of “left”, “right”, “lefts”. This was followed by the All Age Relay, which was dominated by our PSLSC as they did with the majority of the beach events. The sunny day at the Broulee carnival, the first for some years, provided great impetus for exciting competition in the water events, at which the Green and Golds held their own in very strong fields. Steve Skeers and the Nipper committee are to be congratulated on the presentation of the large contingent of nippers who attended the carnival. Nipper carnivals are great events both socially and competitivelyand demand the full support of members of all clubs. Sundays’ carnival saw improved attendance from most clubs, which makes the event worthwhile for all. Thanks to everyone who attended from PSLSC, particularly Stuart Manson, who completed his Carnival Officials Certificate on Saturday morning, swept the surfboats, then lined up to officiate at both the Senior and Junior carnivals.
The Broulee SLSC opened the bistro for those who were attending both carnivals, and senior members of our club would be pleased to know the C1 and C2 flew the flag.

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Nipper Committee Chairman, Steve Skeers, advises that the Nippers Registration and Proficiency day will be held at the Pambula Community Swimming Pool on Sunday 1 November from 10:00am until 1:00 pm. Membership fees remain at : Active-$55:00; Associate-$60:00; Junior-$35:00; Family-$150:00. The Family membership represents parents and dependent children. Steve also advises that the Nippers’ pre season meeting will be held at the PSLSC at 6:00 pm, on either Monday 2 November or Tuesday 3 November, whichever suits, keeping in mind Tuesday is Melbourne Cup Raceday.

PSLSC is privileged to host the first round of the Far South Coast Boat Series for the new season. This highly successful competition attracts the elite in surf boat crews from up and down the coast and is a true spectacle. Rarely has this competition been held out of the Wollongong area. To ensure that this day is a success, PSLSC Club Captain, Megan Quarmby, asks all available active and non active members to assist with the organisation of the carnival during the day. PSLSC Radio Officer, Dominic Hides, has volunteered to co-ordinate the volunteers for the day. Volunteers will be required for a patrol from 10:30 am until 5:00pm,approx. and help will be needed at the BBQ, food and refreshment areas. Those who intend to assist on the day should contact Dominic, phone 64953003 or email :culgoa31@bigpond.com . Carnival officials are may also be required although Ray Meredith has agreed to lend his not too inconsiderable experience to the event.

The Welcome to the New Patrol Season Social Night was held last Saturday evening at the PSLSC and was considered by all to be great success. A good number of active members attended and our Club Captain, Megan Quarmby, gave an informative insight as to what was expected on patrols this season. Margie Doyle dispensed the new style patrol uniforms, which were met with a rather mixed reception, and the old uniforms were resigned to the recycle bin. The catering allocation worked out well and the meal could only be described as supurb. My favourite was theSticky Date Pudding…and the Sauce. Active members, who have not received their new uniforms, are advised to exchange their old uniforms for new with Margie on their next patrol. On no account must the old uniforms be worn again.

Miss Quarmby also advises that further proficiency updates will be conducted by the PSLSC CTO, Michele Bootes during the pre New Year patrols. The water component proficiencies (run-swim-run and rescues) are on 29 Nov and 6 Dec at 9:00am. All active members are expected to attend. All proficiencies will be at the PSLSC. Active members, both BM and Surf Rescue Certificate holders, particularly those who attended Wambiri, must complete their proficiency prior to 31 December 2009.

Following on the success of the recent IRB school at the PSLSC, the FSC IRB officer, Tony Rettke, advises that another class, both Driver and Crew is planned for 13 and 14 November at the Narooma SLSC. Candidates for the Crew certificate may train at 14 years to be 15 years at the final assessment and for the Driver’s Silver Medallion they may train at 16 years to be 17 years at the final assessment. Candidates must hold a BM. This is a great opportunity for an introduction to these awards and all eligible members are encouraged to take up this offer, plus it’s a lot of fun. Those who wish to attend should contact our IRB Captain, Nigel Ayling as soon as possible, to obtain the necessary documentation and to arrange transport.

Michele Bootes conducted her Senior First Aid course last Saturday at the PSLSC at which the large class was witness to a real life first aid situation. Thanks to Don and Wendy for stepping into the breach at short notice and we’re all pleased to note that Michele has made a full recovery.

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of local community stalwart, Bruce Hetherington. Bruce was a great supporter of the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club for many, many years. Our deepest sympathies go to his family at this time.

This course will be held in conjunction with the Jet Ski training course which began last weekend at the PSLSC. The drivers themselves organised the weekend and were extremely satisfied with the outcome. The PSLSC will be in receipt of a new jet ski before the season proper, but in the meanwhile have one on loan with which to practice.

In keeping with SLSA NSW directives, the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club’s Active members began the season’s patrols at 1: 00 pm on Saturday and called a halt to activities on Monday at 1: 00 pm. The weather was not what we all would have liked, but a few souls braved the conditions to vindicate our presence on the beach. In particular, thanks to the few very keen members who fronted up to the season’s first Voluntary patrol on Monday. The patrols for next weekend are Saturday : Patrol 8 from 1:00pm---3:00 pm. Patrol Captain is Greg Shaw. On Sunday we have Simon Byrne’s Patrol 2 from 9:00am—1:00pm.
The Patrol Roster that Club Captain, Megan Quarmby, has put together has number of personel changes to the patrols. The patrol roster which has been emailed to all active members is on the PSLSC website and is posted in the PSLS Club’s foyer. Members are requested to study the patrol roster to be aware of the patrol changes. Active members are reminded that if they can not attend a patrol they must inform their patrol captain, and also find a substitute. In previous seasons active members have had some difficulty in finding replacement patrol members, but this will now be a thing of the past. From this season the PSLSC has created a Welcome to the New Patrol Season Social Night, which will be held on 24 October at the PSLSC from 6:00 pm, and to which all Patrolling members must endeavour to attend. This will be a great opportunity for everyone to meet members of other patrols, discover what is new in the world of Patrol, receive a copy of the patrol roster and receive our new Patrol uniforms. All active members have been requested by SLSA to hand in their current patrol uniforms in return for the newer version. Members are reminded that those who require Active Reserve status are required to apply for this position at the beginning each season or be included on the Patrol Roster.
The Patrol Social evening will be self catered by the nine patrols in this fashion: Patrols 1 & 2 will bring the entrée and nibblies. Patrols 3,4,5& 6 will bring the main course, and Patrols 7,8 & 9 will be in charge of the dessert. I suppose those on the reserve list will do the washing up!
