Pambula Surf Life Saving Club members are advised that, despite the recent break in and vandalising of the old clubhouse and the destruction of essential social equipment, this Friday’s Social Night will go ahead at the old clubhouse, but probably for the last time.
Members are requested to bring a plate, packet, box or something to share along with BYO light refreshments from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. The PSLSC management would like to thank Spic and Span Cleaning of Pambula for their prompt and professional attention to the cleaning of the clubhouse following the mindless vandalising of the premises recently, and also to Pambula Glass for reinstalling the glass doors so quickly.

The PSLSC Presentation Night has been set down for 28 June at the Royal Willows Hotel, the Bottom Pub, in Pambula, with further information to be forwarded in a club newsletter. Also included with the newsletter will be the Awards Nomination form, which should be completed by all members and returned by13 June, as this is the real guide to appropriate recognition of member’s seasonal contributions. The Ecclefechan Award is one award that springs immediately to mind, the holder of which, if in doubt, could do worse than discuss their selection with members of the Clowns. As usual, Clowns Incorporated will be making a cameo appearance at both the PSLSC and Branch Presentations and, as usual, we can expect a top class performance. Members are also advised that Award Certificates and Medallions, BM, SRC, ARC, IRBD and IRBC, for both seniors and cadets, have been received by the PSLSC Training Staff and these will be available or presented on the night.

The NSWSLS Far South Coast Branch Presentation Night will be held by the Tathra SLSC at the Tathra SLSC on Saturday, 14th June from 6:00pm for 6.30pm start. The cost is $35:00 per head which will include a two course meal and entertainment by one of the districts’ most outstanding musicians, Andy O’Donnell, following the presentations and a performance by the redoubtable Clowns Incorporated. Please purchase tickets from the PSLSC Secretary, Sandy Farrell, RSVP:7th June, as numbers are limited. Please notify when reserving a ticket if a vegetarian or other special meal is required.

The SLSNSW Awards of Excellence were held in Sydney on 3 May at which the winner of the Community Education Program of the Year award was the Special Nippers & Cadet Program run by Pambula SLSC, Far South Coast Branch. Dave Pheeney, Far South Coast Branch President, received the award on behalf of Pambula SLSC. The program was created by Michele Bootes who has produced a DVD of the program for other branches so they can see how the program was set up and is managed. The Far South Coast Branch also received the Country Event of the Year which was the 2008 Navy George Bass Marathon,  and the award was also accepted by FSC President, Dave Pheeney.

Despite the non appearance of our promised Federal funding, work is continuing at the PSLSC New Building and Community Centre. The donation of $12000 from the Lakeview Hotel’s Golf Day has enabled the painting to be completed by Wes Fleet Painting Contractors, and the patrol tower access stairs are now being fabricated. The auditorium floor has been securely screwed down and sanded. The BVSC has assisted greatly with the sewer system design and hook up, which will save the PSLSC a significant amount of money and anguish.  Also we have secured 100 chairs and 25 tables from the Merimbula-Imlay Bowling Club for the new clubhouse.

SLSNSW will be conducting a Scrutineering Course at SLSNSW Headquarters on Friday, 22nd August from 6-9pm and Saturday, 23rd August from 9am. Names of interested members need to be to SLSNSW by Monday, 23rd June.
Surf Life Saving Australia and Surf Life Saving New South Wales are now calling for nominations from currently accredited Level One Surf Coaches interested in furthering their coaching skills to participate in a Level 2 Surf Coach Course to be held at Maroubra, so please contact Sandy if you are interested.
There will be a Level 1 Introductory Surf Coach Course  on the 14th-15th June at Batemans Bay. Applications close at SLSNSW 1 week before the course is to be run. The enrolment fee is $185 per candidate and includes all relevant coaching material and practical and theoretical coaching instructions, as well as morning/afternoon teas and lunch. Please contact Sandy for relevant information.

Congratulations to Michele Bootes who has taken over as the FSC Branch Director of Education. Michele is right on the ball and has issued a calender of awards courses to be held during the off season. Please contact Michele for details, or access the PSLSC website.

Sponsors of the Week are Merimbula Imlay Bowling Club and Dave the Sparky Auto Electrical Service in Pambula.

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club received a welcome surprise at their social night recently. PSLSC President, Don Hay, was present to accept two of the new “G” type Rescue Boards from Jason McMillan, General Manager of Bega Toyota, and a keen supporter of surf lifesaving. Don thanked Jason for his generous gesture and acknowledged that these Rescue Boards will be a most welcome addition to the clubs rescue equipment. Don advised that, because of their innovative design, the new rescue boards will be most beneficial for the lighter and smaller members of the clubs rescue patrols’.

With the completion of the season proper, local surf lifesaving’s thoughts now turn to   presentation nights. The PSLSC Presentation Night has been set down for 28 June at the Royal Willows Hotel, the Bottom Pub, in Pambula, with further information to be forwarded in a club newsletter. Also included with the newsletter will be the Awards Nomination form, which should be completed by all members, as this is the real guide to appropriate recognition of member’s seasonal contributions. Those members who received perpetual trophies last season are requested to return these perpetual shields and trophies to either Tess or Paul Williams in Merimbula (Hertz/ Auto One) or Don at 28 Jinjera Parade, Pambula Beach as soon as possible. Members are also advised that Award Certificates and Medallions, for both seniors and juniors, have been received by the PSLSC Training Staff and these will be available or presented on the night. The NSWSLS Far South Coast Branch Presentation Night will be held by the Tathra SLSC, at a venue yet to be decided, on 14 June. Further information will be available following the Branch meeting.

PSLSC Special Nippers coordinator, Michele Bootes, advises that the Special Nippers program will continue throughout the off season, but only on the last Saturday of each month. This initiative has been brought about by the parents’ belief that continued contact among these nippers throughout the year would be most beneficial. Michele has devised out of water activities for the winter period that will require the presence of only a limited number of active members.  Active members who would be interested in participating in this program should contact Michele, phone 64953375.

How fortunate was the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club and Community Centre New Building to obtain the services of local painter and decorator Wes Fleet, despite his name being inadvertently omitted from the local phone book, to complete the painting at the new building. Wes and his gang spent the best part of last week bringing the interior of the building up to scratch to match the preparatory work done to the auditorium floor prior to it’s final sanding. Further work on the building is being severely curtailed due to the non appearance of our promised Federal funding. We continue to live in hope.

Members of the PSLSC were saddened at the passing recently of one of the club’s original Lifeguards, Keith Gordon. Our condolences go out to his wife, Margaret, and all the Gordon family at this time.

Sponsors of the Week are Bega Toyota, Bega, and the Horizon Credit Union in Merimbula.

April 10,2008

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Nippers season came to an end last weekend with the presentation of awards, the Brats v Adults Challenge on Saturday afternoon and finally the Bermagui Junior carnival on Sunday. At the presentation of awards, all nippers were recognised for their efforts during the season. Jack Hay was awarded the Nipper of the Year and Alex Blackburn-Smith the Nipperette of the Year. Most improved in the water went to Ryan Sinclair and the “All Heart” award went to Tyler Mulvey. The Club Person of the Year went to Murray and Michele Blackburn-Smith for their unstinting contribution to all aspects of the Nipper programme. The 2008 Brats v Adults Challenge brought out the best in everyone, with the Brats taking out the challenge. Some of the highlights of the afternoon included the spectacular helicopter-building sand castle competition, with little Will Stone creating the body and propeller of the Brats sandcastle. Other highlights included the adults march past, in which the entire team of adults marched in two straight lines up the beach, according to directions given by PSLSC President Don Hay. Stuck in the mud proved interesting, played in knee-deep water, and the wade relay became chaotic when someone shouted, “Everyone go NOW!” By the end of the afternoon, all of the brats and adults, who participated, were happily wet right through which was very unfortunate for those who forgot their wetsuits. The afternoon concluded with a barbeque, kindly cooked by Peter Bootes. Chairpersons of the Nippers, Renee and Kim Granger, would like to thank everyone for their help and support throughout the season, particularly Committee members Tracey Fergusson, Nigel Ayling and Murray and Michele Blackburn-Smith; John Liston for his Surf Awareness sessions and, of course, Ann Smith and her Water Safety people, and the ever present Age Managers and also those who took on the cooking duties during the season.
A strong contingent of PSLSC nippers descended on Bermagui on Sunday morning for the final FSC Branch carnival of the season and were greeted by a typical flat sea and a very narrow beach. A day of high quality competition ensued which was completed with the Deep Water Wade Relay, a fun event which generated great excitement throughout the three races, of which the PSLSC nippers won two. The Branch recorders will release the results of the carnival, and the Branch championships, in the near future. Thanks to all PSLSC nippers, parents and officials who supported the carnivals during the season.
PSLSC was a busy place on Saturday afternoon with the Nippers season wind up preceded by that of the PSLSC Special Nippers. The Special Nippers turned up in force for their final activities afternoon with plenty of helpers on hand. The usual format was followed, with the warm up run, stretches, flags and relay, then the tunnel ball and overhead ball. The wade races always provide plenty of entertainment and excitement, and in the water, nearly everyone had a go on the G boards and all the cadets took their turn on the sea kayak. The Special Nippers parents were kind enough to provide a BBQ lunch for everyone, on the apron of the New Building, then the seasons’ participation Certificates and trophies were presented by all the helpers. The Special Nippers parents presented club President, Don Hay, with a donation for the New Building. Don thanked the parents and everyone, particularly our younger helpers, for their contributions to the programme, which is going from strength to strength. Special Nippers co-ordinator, Michele Bootes commented on the success of the programme, and made special mention of our young active members who have provided an extra dimension to this wonderful programme. There is no doubt that our Special Nippers are gaining plenty from their presence.

The Relay for Life is on again on this weekend and preparations for the event will start at the old clubhouse at 8:00 am on Saturday for members of the PSLSC relay team. Those who would like to join the PSLSC team, please contact Don Hay by e-mail : president@pambulasurf.org.au

April 3 2008

Last Sunday the Pambula Surf Live Saving Club Nippers took part in a Mini Carnival to see out the formal part of the seasons’ activities. The squad was split into two groups following an Age Group March Past, where the U 10s showed superb form, and an All Age Relay, which generated a lot of excitement. Both groups then participated in a series of water events which included the Board Rescue Relay and the Ironman Relay. These events provided great entertainment and the morning was completed with a BBQ. Thanks to all who contributed to a great morning, particularly the water safety people, who continually do a fantastic job, and the Age Managers and the Officials for keeping the show ticking along. Thanks also to the Committee for a great programme, and the cooks for the BBQ. Next week the Nippers will wind up the season with a Twilight Nippers on Saturday afternoon from 2:00 pm. A change to the programme has the seasons’ Presentations first up, followed by a BBQ then the famed Brats V Adults Challenge which always manages to conjure up a little controversy. Parents and senior members should bring along a wet suit and be prepared for anything.  The final Nippers carnival for the season will be held this Sunday at Bermagui, please be at the beach by 8:00 am. Bermagui is a very safe beach and is an ideal beach for those who may be a little hesitant about competing at one of these carnivals. All active parents should bring a wet suit for water safety duties.

The Special Nippers programme is also winding down for the season and the final activities afternoon will be next Saturday from 1:00 pm. All active members who have assisted this season are urged to attend. Last Saturday we all but had a full compliment of Special Nippers for the afternoons’ activities. Everyone took part in the full range of activities and the Nippers continue to demonstrate the improvement that has been made during the course of this wonderful programme. The recent inclusions of tunnel ball, the wade race and beach cricket have become very popular among the group and provide great opportunities for social involvement. The water activities continue to hold their attraction and on good days it is difficult to extract the Nippers from the ocean. Thanks to all for attending another wonderful afternoon.

Last Saturday we saw a good turnout for a working bee at the PSLSC New Building and Community Centre. The excellent work done by Bob Emms, Peter Terry and their associates during the past couple of weeks was consolidated with a general clean up and a few technical problems solved regarding our floor. Those with a gift for painting put a big dent in the ground floor paint work, inside and out, while those with lesser gifts dug holes and carried away rubbish. Those with even lesser skills gave advice. Tess, Sandy and Rick completed a productive morning by providing a welcome BBQ and refreshments. The morning also provided an opportunity to farewell a long standing supporter of the PSLSC, Paul O’Dowd, who has assisted the club in many ways over the years, but more recently with the New Building. Paul is off to join his family in Ireland and we wish him all the very best in his new life. Thanks to all who gave their time to the working bee on Saturday and to those generous souls who have contributed so much over the past few weeks.

Members are reminded that the Social Night is on this Friday evening at the Surf Club from 6:00 pm. Please bring a plate or a box of something to share.

The Relay for Life is on again on the weekend of 12 and 13 April. Those who would like to join the PSLSC team, please contact Don Hay by e-mail : president@pambulasurf.org.au

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Nippers’ Committee advises that there is a change to the end of the season and will take the form of a Twilight Nippers, which will take place on 5 April, preceding the final Branch Junior Carnival on Sunday 6 April, and will begin at 2:00 pm for a 2:30 pm start. This will be the Brats V Adults day and will be followed by a BBQ and the seasons Presentations. Parents and senior members should bring a wet suit and be prepared for anything.
With the end of the season quickly approaching, now would be an ideal time for nipper parents to give a lot of thought to the formation of a new Nippers Committee for next season, as it appears that the present members may well be moving on following the seasons completion. The young girls, Kim and Renee, with Nigel and Tracey’s assistance, have done a mighty job during the season and would be only too willing to provide all relevant information to those who might be interested. Please give this matter some serious consideration.

The Special Nippers had another great day on Saturday when the beach events took precedence over the water events, although the wade race proved to be another winner. There was a fair bit of huffing and puffing at the end. Cold conditions kept the water activities to a minimum, but an extended game of beach cricket kept everyone occupied until the Easter Bunny had paid his visit. Following showers, the search for Easter eggs provided a lot of entertainment and was a great end to the afternoons’ activities. Thanks to all for attending this wonderful afternoon. This programme will run until 5 April and active members who would like to take part for the last couple of Saturdays should contact Michele Bootes.

Funding for the PSLSC New Building and Community Centre may still be a bit scarce, but enthusiasm isn’t for a couple of our community members. The mammoth task of screwing down the auditorium floor was undertaken by members Bob Emms and Peter Terry who over the past couple of weeks have managed to complete this task. No mean feat which involved screwing in approximately 10500 screws. Congratulations boys and thanks from all involved in the PSLSC.

March 19 2008

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Nippers’ activities continue to be well supported, even at this late stage of the season. Excellent conditions, despite a bit of weed, provided a good platform for the water and beach activities, which were attacked with much enthusiasm. The rotation system still stands up to scrutiny and provides a sound grounding in surf safety and for a future in surf lifesaving. There would be no argument over John Liston being the most knowledgeable and best educator and communicator in the business. Thanks to all who contributed to yet another successful morning’s activities.

The young girls, Kim and Renee, with Nigel and Tracey’s assistance, have done a mighty job during the season and no doubt wouldn’t be averse to dispensing a bit of information regarding the intricacies of the organisation. Please give this matter some serious consideration.
The Nippers’ Committee advises that there is a change to the end of the season and will take the form of the resurrected Twilight Nippers. This will take place on 5 April, preceding the final Branch Junior Carnival on Sunday 6 April, and will begin at 2:00 pm for a 2:30 pm start. This will be the Brats V Adults day and will be followed by a BBQ and the seasons Presentations. Parents and senior members should bring a wet suit and be prepared for anything.

The Special Nippers had another great day on Saturday, with conditions which suited everybody. We welcomed Elliott into our band of helpers and Foggy took the warm up. The flags and relay were fun as usual while it was a relief to have the balls back for the tunnel ball. The wade race was a terrific success and it was difficult to get everyone out of the water at the end of the session. Thanks to all for attending these wonderful afternoons. This programme will run until April and active members who would like to take part should contact Michele Bootes.

A small but enthusiastic group of PSLSC competitors attended the Moruya carnival last Sunday with mixed results. The surfboats “A” team ran the champion Vikings close in all races in relatively flat conditions. The ski paddlers had a fairly successful day with Potts and Siobhan taking out the Branch Championship for the Mixed double Ski while Emma and Siobhan did well in the swim and board events. A full list of Branch Champions will be announced at the coming Branch Meeting.

Congratulations and thanks to the Merimbula Lakeview Hotel for the wonderful   Charity Golf Day and Auction last Friday in support of the PSLSC. Despite the heat everyone had a great day while the Auction and Raffle at the Lakeview Hotel was enthusiastically attended, well supported and most successful.

March 12 2008

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Nippers continued with their usual activities last Sunday with the early introduction of the winter sports taking their toll. However, a significant number of Nippers turned out to go through their paces. The water components were undertaken in great conditions and a full rotation was undergone as usual. John Liston’s spot was taken by CTO Frank Davey, who gave a clear demonstration of Mr.Liston’s value to the programme All sessions for the remainder of the season will most likely be geared to the final junior carnival at Bermagui on 6 April. Thanks again to the Age Managers, water safety people and all who assisted during the morning.

The Special Nippers goes from strength to strength in its seventh year with the programme now expanded to include cadets. Last Saturday a full compliment of nippers came for another afternoon of fun activities. It was pleasing to see everyone become involved in the warm up, beach flags, baton relay and the new twist on tunnel ball, which demonstrated the squads’ ability to adapt to change. Long term helpers are continually impressed with the improvement in the nippers’ social skills and their continuing improvement in the group activities. Beach cricket has become very popular at the end of the activities for some of the members and the players’ generous attitude towards each other is most impressive. Thanks to PSLSC secretary, Sandy Farrell, who coordinated Saturdays’ activities in the absence of Michele Bootes, and she was most impressed with the number of helpers available for the afternoon, particularly our younger active members who do such a great job with their charges.   This programme will run until April and active members who would like to take part should contact Michele Bootes.

Those active members who are undergoing IRB driver training are advised that a further theory paper will have to be completed prior to the final assessment. Our patrols are also looking for more Advanced Resuscitation Certificate candidates. Please contact Frank Davey for more information.

Senior competitors are reminded that the Senior Carnival at Moruya this Sunday will begin with the surfboats at 8:30 am and the craft events at 9:30 am. A copy of the programme is available from Greg Shaw and Andrew Holt. All competitors should be at the Moruya SLSC thirty minutes prior to their event.

Buoyed by the promise of imminent Commonwealth funding, work is continuing at the PSLSC New Building and Community Centre. Members have, and will be, putting in a lot of time completing the auditorium floor, the first floor toilets are ready for tiling, the front deck has been waterproofed and the cupboards have been installed in the First Aid room. The ground floor areas are ready to be painted and the toilet and shower divisions have also been installed. An interim house committee has been formed to determine the direction the completed building will take.

The Lakeview Hotel is holding a Charity Golf Day and Auction on the 14 March, in aid of the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, at the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club. This will be a four man Ambrose event with a shotgun start at 11:00 am. The cost is $120:00 pp or $399:00 per team of four which includes lunch and refreshments. Please contact Don Hay for more information.

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Nippers reverted to their usual activities last Sunday with the water components being taken in a kind but cold ocean. A full rotation was undergone as usual with Mr. Liston again in fine form with his historical facts and safety hints. All sessions for the remainder of the season will most likely be geared to the final junior carnival at Bermagui on 6 April. Thanks again to the Age Managers, water safety people and all who assisted during the morning.

The Special Nippers goes from strength to strength in its seventh year with the programme now expanded to include cadets which provides another dimension to the activities. Long term helpers are continually impressed with the improvement in the nippers’ social skills and their continuing improvement in the group activities. Beach cricket has become very popular at the end of the activities and the players generous attitude towards each other is most impressive. Impressive, too, is the input of our many young helpers who inject that extra youthful vitality into the activities. This programme will run until April and active members who would like to take part should contact Michele Bootes.

Six of our Under 14s are busily preparing for their weekend at the Wambiri Development and Leadership Camp, beginning this Friday at Tathra, at which they will receive their Surf Lifesaving Certificate following weeks of study and a final assessment at the camp. Also attending the camp will be a number last season’s candidates who will be attending in a leadership role, assisting with patrol groups and instruction for which they will receive their Leadership Certificate. This year is the twelfth year of the Wambiri Development and Leadership Camp and all indications are that this will have the largest attendance since its inception. The leadership component is a recent innovation and has proved very popular with former candidates.

The final Bronze Medallion course for the season was completed last Sunday, with the theory paper being taken in the PSLSC New Building and Community Centre. This would then be the first official Surf Lifesaving activity to take place in the New Building. This exam also incorporated the trial exam for the six Wambiri Development and Leadership Camp candidates in preparation for their Surf  Rescue Certificate at the camp during this weekend. Congratulations to Sophie, Mia and Elliot on completing their Bronze Medallion, and welcome to the world of Surf Lifesaving. Thanks to our two trainers, Michele and Peter, and thanks also to the day’s Chief Assessor, Super Kent.

Those active members who are undergoing IRB driver training are advised that a further theory paper will have to be completed prior to the final assessment. Our patrols are also looking for more Advanced Resuscitation Certificate candidates. Please contact Frank Davey for more information.

The PSLSC uniforms officer, Margie Doyle, advises that she is holding a mid season sale of PSLSC clothing, including senior rash vests and club tops, over the next couple of weekends and she also has red wide brimmed patrol hats for sale at $10.

The Lakeview Hotel is holding a Charity Golf Day and Auction on the 14 March, in aid of the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, at the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club. Feb 19

The Far South Coast Branch of SLSNSW took their second shot this season at a two day carnival, this time at Tathra Beach. Great weather on both days gave the promise of fierce competition. Pambula Surf Life Saving Club provided a strong contingent of ski paddlers along with a few determined cadets and a men’s boat crew. For those who could endure seven hours on the beach on Saturday, a lot of close competition was on display. Despite a relatively flat sea, all competitors put their best foot forward and provided a full day of exciting competition, although most would agree that all disciplines were pure hard work with little or no surf assistance. Congratulations to all who took part, competitors and Officials, mostly particularly the cadets who really had a dig. Following the Surfboard and Boogie board competition on Sunday morning, the Nipper Carnival got away to a good start, again on time, with the March Past which provided a great blaze of colour and close competition, with only a few points separating the seven clubs. A lot can be said for the simplified scoring system. Again a very flat sea greeted the competitors of which there was a healthy   representation from PSLSC and all FSC clubs. As usual with the Junior carnivals, the beach was a hive of activity with all age groups following their rotation with the two water areas and two beach areas continually on the go. The presentation of placegetters ribbons was held at the end of the carnival with an encouraging number of competitors and families remaining to take part in this innovation. PSLSC finished third overall behind the strong Broulee club and the home team, Tathra, and were equal third in the March Past. Thanks to the Tathra SLSC for preparing the venue and also providing a BBQ and Social night on the Saturday night for those who stayed for the following day. Those who made the effort had a very entertaining evening. Thanks also to all officials and to those who took on the water safety duties. The next senior carnival is at Moruya on 16 March and the final junior carnival is at Bermagui on 6 April. Nippers will continue as usual this Sunday and Special Nippers will continue their eighth season on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.

Six of our Under 14s are busily preparing for their weekend at the Wambiri Development Camp, beginning 29 February at Tathra, at which they will receive their Surf Lifesaving Certificate following weeks of study and a final assessment at the camp. Also attending the camp will be a number last season’s candidates who will be attending in a leadership role, assisting with patrol groups and instruction.

The final Bronze Medallion course for the season continued last Saturday morning and should come to a conclusion this Sunday. Those active members who are undergoing IRB driver training are advised that a further theory paper will have to be completed prior to the final assessment. Our patrols are also looking for more Advanced Resuscitation Certificate candidates. Please contact Frank Davey for more information.

Last Thursday, the Tallangatta High School paid their annual visit to Pambula Beach. The PSLSC are requested to put a patrol on for these activities, and this duty these days falls to our members, teachers and students, at Lumen Christi CC. On Thursday they turned up in their numbers to provide a safe aquatic environment for the visitors from the west. Thanks to all those members for giving their time for this most important activity.

PSLSC Secretary, Sandy Farrell is currently updating members contact information and would like all nipper parents, associate members and active members, who have not yet done so, to supply her with their current email addresses. Please contact Sandy at: secretary@pambulasurf.org.au

The PSLSC uniforms officer, Margie Doyle, advises that she will be holding a mid season sale of PSLSC clothing, including senior rash vests and club tops, over the next couple of weekends and she also has red wide brimmed patrol hats for sale at $10.

Excellent conditions greeted the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Nippers on Sunday morning for their activities. Exacting surf conditions provided a challenging swim for the older age groups, while the younger groups had to be satisfied with shorter courses. The IRB crews were kept busy all morning with adjustment of the buoys and the water safety people were kept on their toes. The beach activities were given a boost with the presence of former champion flags ace, Troy Torpey, who imparted some useful hints to the aspiring flags competitors. Thanks to all water safety personal, Age Managers and cooks who contributed so much to another successful morning. Next Sunday there will not be any Nippers because of the Carnival at Tathra. The Senior carnival on Saturday begins with the surf boats, at 12:00 pm followed at 1:00 pm with the craft team events, then the individual events. On Sunday, the Nippers Carnival will follow the familiar format. Surfboard and Boogie board competition at 6:30 am, Age Managers at 8:00am, Marshalling at 8:15 am and March Past at 8:30 am. Carnival competitors are asked to be at the Tathra SLSC before 8:00am.

The final Bronze Medallion course for the season continued last Saturday morning and will proceed for the following two weekends. Next Saturday morning,at 8:30 am, will be the last chance this season for any aspiring candidates to attend a BM course. Congratulations to Michele Miller and Sam Davis, who passed their BM final assessment recently, and welcome to the world of Surf Lifesaving. Those active members who are undergoing IRB driver training are advised that a further theory paper will have to be completed prior to the final assessment. Our patrols are also looking for more Advanced Resuscitation Certificate candidates. Please contact Frank Davey for more information.

The Pambula SLSC Special Nippers continued in their eighth season last Saturday with a record number of nippers, again, in attendance. We welcomed members of our BM squad into the realms of helpers together with a Canadian student who also has a background in this type of activity. All were most impressed with the program and enjoyed the afternoon’s activities. The nippers, too, enjoyed the afternoon and were most enthusiastic in their warm up, flags, relays and ball games preceding the mandatory dip in the ocean and the beach cricket to round off the afternoon. We marvel at the improvement in the social and team based skills these young people are achieving as the program progresses. Any active members who would like to participate in this program should contact Michele Bootes for more information.

The PSLSC New Building and Community Centre has not quite ground to a halt, despite the funding quandary. Last week the shower room partitions were installed, thanks to Andrew Holt and his assistants, and then volunteers, on Monday, prepared the auditoriam floor for its final finish. The lawns around the building look a picture thanks to the hard working Peter, Bob and crew.

Sponsors of the Week are Kellow Parbery and Associates P/L of Eden, Merimbula and Bega and Coastal Builders P/L in Pambula Beach.

February 5

On Sunday we wished the carnival was on Saturday, but on Monday we were glad it was on Sunday. Despite the heavy, churning seas, the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Nippers turned on a great carnival on Sunday for the second in this season’s series. Branch officials deemed the conditions challenging, which proved to be so as the day progressed. The day began with the Surfboard and Boogie board competition under the watchful eyes of referees David Prowse and Henry Jones, and the day got off to a good start for the host club with Jack Hay taking out the U 14 event. Much praise must go to Don Hay and Gavin Granger for their excellent effort in laying and adjusting the cans throughout the day. Not a job for the faint hearted. In one of the miracles of our age, the carnival got away on time with a great March Past display and never faltered through to the final flag event. A lot of credit must go to the Area Referees for their display of common sense and innovation in keeping up the carnival’s continuity. Congratulations to our water safety personnel, who turned up in their numbers, and were described by the senior Area Referee as the best ever. Renee and Kim did a marvellous job with the organisation of the day, with assistance from all quarters. A terrific number of nippers came from as far away as Batemans Bay and Jindabyne for a day of great competition. The Pambula Nippers came in second on the day to the strong Broulee club. The PSLSC Nippers and FSC Branch committees would like to thank everyone for their contribution to a great day. All carnival ribbons should be given out at Nippers on this coming Sunday. The next Junior Carnival is at Tathra on 17 February. The team event will be the Board Rescue. Nippers’ activities will continue this Sunday from 9:15 am.

The final Bronze Medallion course for the season began last Saturday morning with an induction and information morning. The course will continue next Saturday morning from 8:00 am which will allow any prospective late candidates to attend.  Those active members who are undergoing IRB driver training are advised that a further theory paper will have to be completed prior to the final assessment. Our patrols are also looking for more Advanced Resuscitation Certificate candidates. Please contact Frank Davey for more information.

PSLSC Secretary, Sandy Farrell is currently updating members contact information and would like all nipper parents, associate members and active members, who have not yet done so, to supply her with their current email addresses. Please contact Sandy at : secretary@pambulasurf.org.au

The Pambula SLSC Special Nippers began their eighth season last Saturday with a record number of nippers in attendance. We welcomed some new faces but it was great to see many of the old hands back again. A good number of active helpers were present for an enjoyable hour or so, but more will be required as the season progresses. Please contact Michele for more information. Everyone had a busy time with body surfing the predominate activity, with a bit of beach cricket on the side. Ice blocks and a guided tour of the yet unfinished New Building was a great way to finish off the day.

Sponsors of the Week are Johann and Julie from J&J Carpentry in Pambula and also the Pambula Rotary Club.

A Special Nippers Request
Pambula's Special Nipper program is commencing this Saturday, 2nd Feb. The program runs from 1 to 2pm for 10 weeks and caters for special needs kids/young adults living between Mallacoota and Tathra. This season
we are trying to cater for 13 kids and desperately need lifesavers willing to assist. Whilst it is great to have people who can commit to the whole 10 weeks it is a very big ask so this year I was hoping to find more people who are willing to help whenever they can make it. No experience is required to take part in the program, just
patience and a sense of fun.
If you have your Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze and would like to give us a hand, even if it is just for a week or two, could you please contact me asap. vicepresident@pambulasurf.org.au
Thanks
Michele Bootes

Trying surf conditions at Pambula Beach on Sunday morning provided an ideal preparation for the Pambula Surf Lifesaving Club Nippers for their Junior Carnival on Sunday. Don Hay made the most of the challenging surf and had his extension group going through their paces during the morning while all age groups put in a strong effort at their beach and water activities. Thanks again to all the water safety personnel, Age managers and all who contributed to a most successful morning.
The PSLSC Nippers committee reminds all nipper parents that a working bee to prepare the beach for the carnival will begin at 6:30 am on Sunday morning and that during the day the club will require Age Managers, cooks for the BBQ, recorders and also people to assist with general duties. Please contact Renee or Kim, phone 64957573, if you can help or require more information. These carnivals are great events and all Nippers from Under 8’s, with their carnival proficiencies, are encouraged to compete and all nippers and club members are also encouraged to attend to help and to add to the atmosphere. All carnivals, Junior and Senior, are conducted by Branch Officials, some whom you might recognise as coming from your club. Water Safety is paramount at Junior Carnivals and all active members are encouraged to come along and lend a hand. The team event at this carnival is the Board Relay. Prior to the Carnival proper, the Surfboard and Boogie board competition will begin at 6:30 am. The Team Managers, Officials and Water Safety meeting is at 8:00am. All competitors should be at the clubhouse at 8:00 am as marshalling is at 8:15 for the March Past at 8:30 am.
Because of the Carnival, there will be no Nippers activities on this Sunday and the Surf Rescue Certificate candidates will have the day off to attend the carnival, provided their work books are up to date.
The final Bronze Medallion course for the season begins this Saturday morning from 8:30 am at the PSLSC clubhouse. All prospective candidates should attend at this time or they can contact Frank Davey for more information.
Congratulations from all club members to NSW, Branch and PSLSC Life Member, J E McGrath, on the celebration of his 60th birthday last Sunday. Jim has patrolled, competed and has held most administrative positions in his 44 years with the Branch and Club and is a founding member of that elitist organisation, Clowns Incorporated. J E’s contribution all these organisations has been invaluable and we envisage that he will be around the place for a many more years to come.
PSLSC members are reminded that club social night is on this Friday night from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. Please bring a plate.
Despite the most disappointing news regarding the retraction of promised funding for the completion of the new Pambula Surf Life Saving Club and Community Centre, the building committee remains hopeful that Federal funding, committed prior to the election, will be forthcoming to assist with the early completion of the project.
Sponsors of the Week are the ANZ Bank in Merimbula and Ann and Brian from the Man from Snowy River Hotel in Perisher.

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Nippers were on hand on Sunday morning to work their way through their nippers programme. Kind sea conditions allowed the activities to proceed without interruption.  A great morning was had by all with a large number of holiday makers on hand to view the nippers’ routine.   Thanks to the water safety personnel, Age managers and all who contributed to a most successful morning. A number of nippers and seniors also attended the Caps Carnival in Narooma on Sunday. This is the first time this event has been held in the Branch, and following a few teething problems the carnival got under way with local officials Don Hay refereeing the carnival and Frank Davey starting the events. Jimmy McGrath, as usual, looked after the sound system. Because of heavy seas the nippers water events were held in the lake and the seniors activities were restricted to a surf and teams and board relay. The carnival was finished off with a combined wade relay which provided a laugh for everyone. Thanks to those who attended the carnival to make it a wo. rthwhile exercise
Those Nippers, 13 years, who wish to do their Surf Rescue Certificate, should contact Frank Davey at Nippers on Sunday. This year the course will be run in conjunction with the Wambiri development camp which will be held early this year on 29 February -2 March. Four of our Under 14’s began the course last Sunday. Any other Under 14’s who would like to do their SRC this season should begin this Sunday.
Much interest has been shown in the PSLSC New Building and Community Centre now that the fence is down. With this in mind the PSLSC management decided to hold an open day last Thursday to which a good number of people, mostly visitors, attended and were quite impressed with progress of the building and the degree to which the community has been involved. The building committee remains hopeful that Federal funding committed prior to the election will be forthcoming to assist with the early completion of the project.
We are pleased that the majority of our active members have returned to patrol again this season and have completed their proficiencies. Those who have not yet complied can do so on the next patrol, but will not be able to compete this season.
Sponsors of the Week are Thrifty Link Hardware in Eden and Boral Country Concrete and Quarries in South Pambula.

A large contingent of Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Nippers turned out for the first activities morning of the year. Strong sea conditions don’t have an up side, so the Nippers took their gear to Main Beach in Merimbula where they found excellent conditions for their activities. A great morning was had by all and was witnessed by a myriad of visitors taking advantage of the fine weather. Thanks to the water safety personnel, Age managers and all who contributed to a most successful morning. Next Sunday will be a big day for the Nippers, with a choice of activities from which to choose. Nippers will begin at 9:15 am as usual at Pambula Beach. However, an alteration to the Caps Carnival in Narooma on Sunday has included Nippers on the program as well. Nipper families who wish to attend this carnival should contact Kim or Renee Granger. To round off the Sunday morning, the Holiday Hub Management has invited the Nippers to conduct a fund raising collection through the Resort, following the Nippers activities. All nippers and parents are invited to participate in this fundraiser.
Those Nippers, 13 years, who wish to do their Surf Rescue Certificate, should contact Michele Bootes at Nippers on Sunday. This year the general arrangement is that this course will be run in conjunction with the Wambiri development camp which will be held early this year on 29 February -2 March. Those candidates who have their manuals please bring them with you.
PSLSC seniors, and particularly the cadets, are reminded that the Caps carnival at the Narooma SLSC on Sunday, beginning at 9:00 am, is a teams event and is non point scoring. Those who are attending the carnival should contact Margie Doyle for further information.
Congratulations to all PSLSC members who took part in the George Bass Surfboat and Ski Marathon. It was a great effort and we were pleased to see all competitors arrive home safely.
Congratulations, too, to all members who patrolled over the Christmas-New Year period, generally under trying conditions. We are pleased to note that the one serious incident had a happy ending. Thanks also to the two Luke’s and Daniel, from Inverloch SLSC in Victoria, who came along to contribute to the patrols while on their holidays.
PSLSC members have assisted with the scaffolding at the Sapphire Rock since its inception. This year is no different. Any five members who could see their way clear to assist on either Saturday or Monday should email Don Hay at president@pambulasurf.org.au by Friday 12 January.
Much interest has been shown in the PSLSC New Building and Community Centre now that the fence is down. With this in mind the PSLSC management has decided to hold an open day this Thursday, 10 January, between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm to which all are invited to attend.
Members are reminded that this Friday night is Social Night from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm. Please bring a plate.
Sponsors of the Week are the Merimbula RSL Club and Lifestyle Financial Advisors Pty. Ltd in Merimbula.
