All Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Active members will be excited at the news that the Surf Patrols begin this weekend, with the Presidents Patrol 6 kicking things off this Saturday afternoon, with a patrol from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Ken Carman’s Patrol 4 will patrol on Sunday 4 October from 9:00 am--1:00 pm .
Club Captain, Megan Quarmby, has put together a Patrol Roster which sees a number of personel changes to the patrols. The patrol roster is on the PSLSC website, it has been emailed to all active members and is posted in the PSLS Club’s foyer. Members are requested to study the patrol roster to be aware of the patrol changes. Active members are reminded that if they can not attend a patrol they must let their patrol captain know, and also find a substitute. In previous seasons active members have had some difficulty in finding replacement patrol members, but this will now be a thing of the past. From this season the PSLSC has created a Welcome to the New Patrol Season Social Night, which will be held on 24 October at the PSLSC from 6:00 pm, and to which all Patrolling members must endeavour to attend. This will be a great opportunity for everyone to meet members of other patrols, discover what is new in the world of Patrol, receive a copy of the patrol roster and receive our new Patrol uniforms. All active members have been requested by SLSA to hand in their current patrol uniforms in return for the newer version.
The Patrol Social evening will be self catered by the nine patrols in this fashion: Patrols 1 & 2 will bring the entrée and nibblies. Patrols 3,4,5& 6 will bring the main course, and Patrols 7,8 & 9 will be in charge of the dessert. I suppose those on the reserve list will do the washing up! Those who are unsure of their patrol should contact Miss Quarmby or bring a plate of their choice to share.

A very successful PSLSC Surf boat Rowers Social Night was held last Friday at the PSLSC. The Annual Surf Boat Rescue Raffle was drawn during the night which produced some expected and some unexpected interruptions, but it was the boat rowers evening. The three major winners in the raffle, who will receive their business name/logo on one each of our three competition surfboats, are: 1. Royal Willows Hotel, Pambula. 2. Blue Water Sports Tackle World, Merimbula. 3. Pambula Glass in Pambula. Congratulations to all the winners. Congratulations also to Ronnie Regan who successfully completed the Level 1 Surf Coaching Certificate.

All those associated with the construction of the New Building will be pleased to note that the finishing touches will be put to the floor of the building’s foyer during the week. This will all but complete the construction of the building.

The PSLSC’s Chief Training Officer, Michele Bootes, has organised a Senior First Aid course on the 24th October at the PSLSC. This will be held in conjunction with the Jet Ski training course and is open to all comers. Please contact Vice Club Captain, Ken Carman, for further information.

PSLSC Club Captain, Megan Quarmby, has cobbled together the draft model of the season’s Patrol Roster. Miss Quarmby advises that Surf Patrols start 3rd of October, which coincides with the beginning of the NSW school holidays. The patrol roster will be on the PSLSC website, it will be emailed to all active members and it will also be in the Merimbula News . Active members are reminded that if they can not attend a patrol they must let their patrol captain know, and also find a substitute. In previous seasons active members have had some difficulty in finding replacement patrol members, but that will now be a thing of the past. From this season the PSLSC has decided to introduce a Welcome to the New Patrol Season Social Night, which will be held in late October at the PSLSC, and to which all Patrolling members are urged to attend. This will be a great opportunity for everyone to meet members of other patrols, discover what is new in the world of Patrol, receive a copy of the patrol roster and, hopefully, receive our new Patrol uniforms, if our Director of Education hasn’t taken them touring. The evening will be catered for by the nine patrols in this fashion:
Patrols 1 & 2 will bring the entrée and nibblies. Patrols 3,4,5& 6 will bring the main course, and Patrols 7,8 & 9 will be in charge of the dessert. Those who are unsure of their patrol number should contact Miss Quarmby or bring a plate to share of their choice.

Members of the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club who were associated with the Far South Coast Branch Management and FSC Surf Sports, attended the funeral of long standing FSC Branch President and Administrator Dave Pheeney, last Thursday, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Moruya. Dave gave a greater part of his life to Surf Life Saving, particularly in regard to a common sense approach to Surf Life Saving in the country clubs. His work on behalf of the Far South Coast Branch clubs is legendary and he leaves behind a never to be forgotten legacy of progressive Surf Life Saving practices.

The Far South Coast Branch, Australian SLA, Annual General Meeting is to be held this Sunday 20th September, 2009 at the Narooma SLSC.  All positions will become vacant at the AGM. Nomination forms for the Branch AGM are available from Frank Davey. The agenda for the day will be: 11.30 am -- Surf Sports Meeting.  12.30pm -- Light lunch : 1pm-- Lifesaving Meeting: 2.30pm --Annual General Meeting: 4pm --Afternoon tea. All delegates are requested to be at the Narooma SLSC no later than 11:00 am. Please contact Pam Hughes regarding travel arrangements.

Last weekend Pambula SLSC hosted a training weekend for 40 Surf Lifesaving trainers, assessors and facilitators from Batemans Bay to Pambula as well as 12 new IRB drivers and crew. Those attending had the opportunity to learn the latest techniques in spinal management from Steve Allan, the Education support officer from SLSNSW, and Graeme Sawyer, a Narooma SLSC facilitator. Members practiced the fitting and application of spinal collars, as well as various methods of extraction of a spinal casualty from still water and surf. A huge thank you is extended to Lauries O’Shea from the Holiday Hub Beach Resort who permitted our lifesavers the use of the park’s heated pool for training and also provided accommodation at a heavily discounted rate.
Kim Fletcher, a Facilitator from Broulee SLSC, put all those present through their defibrillation and ARC proficiencies and also trained members in the new Suction award. Tathra trainers, Peter Miller and Tony Rettke, worked with a dozen new IRB drivers and crew to complete both the theory and practical aspects of their training. Michele, Branch Director of Education, conducted a session on administration, showing members how to navigate the SLSNSW website.
Pamela Simon, SLSNSW Education Manager, who flew down to participate in the weekend, was amazed by the support and generosity of the local community who pitched in to cater for the weekend. CWA members were organised by Margaret Gardiner to provide a delicious array of cakes and slices for all the morning and afternoon teas. Joy, Alison, Jenette and Caris, members of the Imlay House Auxillary, provided a fantastic lunch on Saturday and Tony and members of the Robin Hood Club cooked the BBQs on Saturday night and Sunday lunch. Thanks also to the Merimbula RSL who donated a huge tub of coleslaw, and Beth and Graeme Mills from the Merimbula Icecreamery, who supplied a huge tub of honey comb crumble ice cream with which to feed the masses all weekend. Woolworths in Merimbula also generously contributed a voucher to help cover the costs of the training. All those who attended the conference were suitably impressed by this demonstration of community generosity and support.
Saturday night saw the social side of Surf Lifesaving take over with the usual suspects to the fore. Peter did a roaring refreshment trade, and Pam H relaxed following a big day in the kitchen.
On Sunday morning Pam S gave a presentation on the changes to the Bronze medallion. Peter Bootes finished with a session on the latest upgrades to Surfguard. All the trainers declared the weekend a great success, one that should become an annual event. Congratulations to Michele on a great innovation.

All members, sponsors and supporters are reminded that the PSLSC Surfboat rowers Social night will be held this Friday evening from 5:30 pm at the PSLSC, at which the Annual Surf Boat Rescue Raffle will be drawn.

Sponsors of the Week are the Holiday Hub Beach Resort at Pambula Beach and the Merimbula Ice Creamery in Merimbula.

Members of the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, particularly those associated with the Far South Coast Branch Management and FSC Surf Sports, will have been saddened by the untimely passing of longstanding FSC Branch President Dave Pheeney, last week, following a prolonged period of ill health. Dave is a Life Member of Moruya SLSC, Life member of Far South Coast Branch SLSA and Life Member of Surf Life Saving NSW. Dave gave freely of his time to the St. John’s Ambulance with many years as an Instructor in all aspects of resuscitation. Dave also had a deep association with the Moruya Basketball Association and Group 16 Rugby League Referees Association. A requiem mass will be held to Celebrate Dave’s life, on Thursday 10th of September, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Moruya at 11:00 am. PSLSC members who wish to attend Dave Pheeney’s funeral should contact Pam Hughes regarding travel arrangements. Our deepest sympathies go to Lesley and her family at this time.

The Far South Coast Branch, Australian SLA, Annual General Meeting is to be held on Sunday 20th September, 2009 at the Narooma SLSC.

The Far South Coast Branch Education Officer, Michele Bootes, has organised a T&A Branch Training Weekend to be held at the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club on this weekend of 11/ 12/13th September. It is Michele’s intention for all Branch Trainers and Assessors complete their proficiencies in spinal management, defibrillation, ARC and bronze resuscitation (if not ARC qualified). Branch is also conducting an IRB training weekend on the 11 -13th of September for new IRB Drivers at our PSLSC in conjunction with the T&A Training weekend. Friday night will be set aside for theory. Saturday and Sunday will be for theory and driving. Candidates will be 17 years at time of the exam and will hold the crewman’s certificate and bronze medallion.

Our much travelled and hard working Club Captain, Megan Quarmby, is presently formulating the season’s patrol roster. Miss Quarmby has advised that, with the advent of the new PSLSC, a Patrol Social Night and Dinner will be held towards the end of October-early November to which all Active Members will be invited to attend. This night will serve to introduce the new Roster and also deliver the new DHL Patrol Uniforms. It is envisaged that this night will also serve as an opportunity for Active Members to get to mix socially with members from other patrols, bearing in mind that, with in excess of one hundred and fifty active members, it would not be unreasonable to expect that there would be a number of members who have never been introduced to each other. This will be your big chance. Details of this evening will be announced when the date has been finalised.

Thanks to a combination of Merimbula Sand and Gravel, North Eden Timber, Sapphire Coast Tree Service and Tower, Mick Brosnan, Vinnie Bray, John Liston, Donald Hay and Peter Terry, the old PSLSC building site has been filled, levelled, seeded, mulched and bollarded. This is the first step toward to the complete landscaping of the area in front of the PSLSC. This will include the completion of the new Public Toilet Block, the removal of the old toilet block, the construction of a boardwalk and viewing platform and, eventually, the removal of the old PSLSC gear shed and construction of the new car parking area.

PSLSC member’s deepest sympathies go out this week, also, to popular Boat Captain Simon Byrne, whose mother, sadly, passed away during the week.

Sponsors of the Week are the Rick Kellow from Kellow and Parbery, Accountants, in Bega, Eden and Merimbula and Sapphire Coast Marine in Pambula.

In maintaining the club’s policy promoting the social aspect of club life, the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club held their inaugural “Christmas on the Horses Birthday”, last Saturday night, I August. As with previous events at the club, the crowd was limited to forty heads, or was it tails, and they were treated to a marvellous meal prepared and presented by Small Feasts Catering. Rick and Don produced the race call of the century to entertain the throng, with nag’s names barely recognisably representing many of those present. A big thank you to Pedro for upholding his part of the bar-gain. These social nights will continue during the remainder of the off season, on the last Friday of each month from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm. It is anticipated that these nights will have a theme, ie. boaties, paddlers, nippers or something like that. Same conditions apply, that is please bring a plate unless otherwise advised.

The Pambula SLSC’s AGM is set down for Tuesday, 25th August at the PSLSC, to begin at 7:00pm. This meeting will be preceded by the PSLSC Nippers’ AGM at 6:00pm. The Annual Report is currently being prepared, so committee members’ reports are requested to be forwarded to Peter Bootes by email and CC’d to the Secretary, Sandy Farrell no later than Tuesday, 11th August. Photos from the past season should also be forwarded to Peter for inclusion in the report. President Don is currently compiling a newsletter to be distributed, along with nomination forms, to all members by the end of this week. Members who would like contributions to be included in the newsletter, please forward them to Don by this Friday, 8 August, at the latest. Members who have a penchant for administration should give a lot of thought to the nomination forms, as many of the prime positions will be up for grabs, so don’t be the one to miss out.

Active members will be pleased to note that our application for the Telstra Assistance Fund was successful and we will shortly be receiving an intercom radio and a Dolphin soft rescue board .This grant is on a dollar for dollar basis and we thank Telstra for their generous support of Surf lifesaving.

For some time now, the PSLSC management has been in serious discussion with State Centre regarding their decision to grant the PSLSC a Jet Ski, as this area has been evaluated as that which one of these vehicles could be most useful.
We have now been approved by both Branch and State Centre to have a Club Support Group which will be run by us and to be used primarily by us under the control of State Centre and Far South Coast Branch DOL and  Representatives from our club as part of this review. State Centre and FSC Branch will organize training and accreditation of those members wishing to undertake the training. Pambula SLSC is the first club in the FSC Branch to be set up this way and the others will follow in the coming seasons. PSLSC will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of this valuable piece of equipment, for which we are reliably informed, is less than that of an IRB on an equal basis.

Sponsors of the Week are the Telstra Corporation Limited and the Royal Willows Hotel in Pambula.

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club’s Annual Presentation night was held last Saturday night at the organisation’s clubhouse at Pambula Beach, preceded by hours of frantic effort to have the new venue ready for the big occasion. The lady rowers did a magnificent job with the table arrangement and decoration and general preparation. President Don’s marvellous effort with framing and hanging, with Tess’ guidance, all the historic pictures, photos and the honour boards, gave the place a sense of history and continuity. An excellent meal for the hundred and ten people present, provided by Small Feasts Catering, set the scene for a great evening. Presentations were made by local MP, Andrew Constance, Mayor, Tony Allan and various Life Members while Peter and Rick attended  to the Power Point Presentations. Dominic Hides’ Ecclefechan Award presentation had everyone in stitches and the Clowns take on the Paper War was up to its usual high standard. It appears that everyone agreed that the night was great and the venue, superb. The major awards presented on the night were : Lifesaver of the Year – Louise Armstrong; Senior Club Person – Ann Smith; Junior Club Person – Megan Warnock; Patrol of the Year – Patrol Six; Peter Robinson Shield – Kym O’Halloran; Encouragement Award – Simon Byrne; BP  Quite Achiever  - Peter Terry; Club Spirit Award – Dominic Hides; CWA Community Volunteer of the Year – Michele and Peter Bootes; Coaches Award – Tara Stone; Most Outstanding Carnival competitor – Master Women’s Boat Crew;  Most Consistent Senior Carnival Competitor – Gerard Kelly; Ecclelfechan Award – Stuart Manson. Thanks to all who contributed to such a great evening.

The Far South Coast Branch Presentation Night will be on this Saturday, 30 May, at the Narooma SLSC. Tickets are $35:00 per person for a catered meal and  will commence at 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. This is always a great night, at which The Clowns have been known to perform, and we all know that the Narooma SLSC is quite capable of coming up with some unusual entertainment. Club members who have had any association with the Branch during the season, through sport, training or administration are encouraged to attend as Branch awards cover the whole spectrum. For travel arrangements and tickets, please contact Sandy Farrell, ASAP.

The PSLSC social evenings have proved very popular with members and guests throughout the season. The social nights will continue during the fast diminishing winter months, on the last Friday of each month from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm, beginning in June. It is anticipated that these nights will have a theme ie. boaties, paddlers, nippers or something like that. Same conditions, please bring a plate unless otherwise advised.

Last Sunday at 5:00 pm, the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club brought their eight month patrol season to a conclusion with the proud boast of “ No Lives Lost Between The Flags”. This season the clubs nine patrols have clocked up close to 3000 patrol hours on the beach plus approximately another 350 water safety hours with the PSLSC Nippers and also 70 hours or so attending to water safety at the Branch’s Junior carnivals. The PSLSC Lifesavers also provided water safety and additional patrols for a number of visiting inland schools during the season. PSLSC “Rubber Duck” crews have attended a number of out of  hours emergencies during the season, and are on a 24 hour a day alert year in, year out, and have a strong working relationship with the Merimbula Coastal Patrol and the local Police. Congratulations to our members for full filling their patrol commitments during the season and for a job well done.

With the completion of the season proper, local surf lifesavers’ thoughts now turn to presentation nights. Members are advised that the PSLSC Presentation Night is set down for Saturday 23 May, at the PSLSC-- at last. Those members who received  perpetual trophies last season are requested to return these perpetual shields and trophies to Tess or Paul Williams in Merimbula (Hertz/ Auto One) or Don Hay at 28 Jinjera Parade, Pambula Beach, as soon as Possible.  Many members have offered to assist with the organisation of the Presentation night with catering, decoration  and a possible “theme” for the night the priorities.  The PSLSC newsletter has been forwarded to all members including the Awards Nomination form, which should be completed by all members and returned before the beginning of May. This is a real guide to the appropriate recognition of member’s seasonal contributions. The Ecclefechan  Award  is one award that springs immediately to mind, the holder of which, if in doubt, could do worse than discuss their selection with members of the Clowns. As usual, it is expected that Clowns Incorporated will be making a cameo appearance at both the PSLSC and Branch Presentations and, as usual, we can expect a top class performance. Members are also advised that Award Certificates and Medallions, BM, SRC, ARC, IRBD and IRBC, for both seniors and cadets, have been received by the PSLSC Training Staff and these will be available or presented on the night. The date and venue for the Far South Coast Branch Presentation Night will be set at the Branch meeting this week.

The PSLSC social evenings have proved very popular with members and guests throughout the season. The season wrap up party on Saturday evening, 18 April, was a great night, catered for by our erstwhile Bar Manager, Annie, who now returns to the colder climes for the winter. The social nights will continue during the fast diminishing winter months on the last Friday of each month, beginning in June, from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm. Same conditions, please bring a plate. Heating for the colder nights will be well catered for with an outdoor gas heater kindly donated by Pambula resident, Bill Ramsdale. Thanks Bill for your very thoughtful, and timely, donation.

The PSLSC boat rowing fraternity will gather this week to discuss the vagaries of the upcoming George Bass Surfboat and Ski Marathon, which will be held at the beginning of January, 2010. Members and supporters who would like to be involved in one of the great weeks in Surf Lifesaving should contact PSLSC Boat Captain, Simon Byrne. The Boat rowers have officially taken charge of the Bottom Pub Saturday Night raffle. The roster is now completed.

The PSLSC Ski Paddlers had a very successful bonding weekend at Mallacoota during the weekend, where, no doubt, their participation in the George Bass Marathon would have been discussed in some depth.

Sponsors of the Week are the Royal Willows Hotel, the Bottom Pub, in Pambula and the Merimbula Coastal Patrol.

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club’s Special Nippers could well have been in Odessa, instead of Pambula Beach, going by the state of the ocean last Saturday week. With a wonderful crowd of Special Nippers, parents and helpers on hand for the seasons’ final afternoon of activities, everyone was fired up for the activities finale. Mitch led the warm up jog, and everyone finally got to toe the line in the flags. The great improvement in sprinting technique was most evident in all participants and everyone enjoyed both the tunnel ball and overhead ball. Then it was into the blackness that was masquerading as the ocean. First the wade races that were undertaken with great gusto with Bradley taking up his customary position as marker, and who does it well, then some took to the water on various craft while many ventured  into the depths with their heads studiously kept out of the water. A barbeque and salad lunch followed the activities and then all Special Nippers received their participation awards. The parents thanked Michele and the helpers by for the season’s activities and Michele advised that the winter activities would begin at the PSLSC at the end of May.

A bit of the “out with the old and in with the new “at the PSLSC this week when the MEN took over possession of the club’s old gear shed to form the first of the areas’ Men’s Sheds. This form of activity has proven very popular throughout country and will be a most welcome addition to retired men’s activities in the area. Please contact Merimbula Rotary for more information.

The PSLSC social evenings have proved very popular with members and guests throughout the season. On Saturday evening, 18 April, the PSLSC will be holding their season wrap up party, complete with dinner with our erstwhile Bar Manager, Annie, doing the cooking. The theme is Italian and although all tickets have been sold, members and guests are invited to come along to enjoy what promises to be a fine social evening

Many members who have offered to help with organising the Presentation  night with catering, decoration  and a possible “theme” for the night the priorities.  The PSLSC newsletter will be forwarded to all members prior to the presentation night and included with the newsletter will be the Awards Nomination form, which should be completed by all members, as this is the real guide to appropriate recognition of member’s seasonal contributions. Members who would wish to have an article included in the newsletter, should have the information to Don Hay before Thursday 9 April.

As the season draws to a close, we are aware that our Surf Patrols will continue through to the Sunday following Anzac Day. Club Captain, Ken Carman, reminds members to ensure that substitutes are notified to replace those who are unable to attend their patrols.
All PSLSC members pass on their condolences to Life Member John Liston, and his family, on the death of his sister, Mary, following a long illness. Mary’s funeral will be held at St. Peters’ Catholic Church,  in Pambula, from 2:00 pm. on this Thursday, 16 April.

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, last Sunday, was the venue for the PSLSC Nippers seasons’ Presentations. Historically, this was the first major club event to be conducted in the new building. Preceding the Presentations a huge crowd of nippers and their parents attended a morning of fun competition between the adults and their offspring. The results of the beach events remain in dispute, but the result of the swim and board relay was left in no doubt with the adults emerging victors  following great swims by Karen and Michele and superb board legs from Chris and Sterling. The Tug o’ War as a usual was a load of fun, but not as much as a couple of rounds of Stuck in the Mud. The club’s auditorium was fairly crowded for a welcome lunch of pizza, which was then followed by the presentations. All nippers were recognised for their efforts during the season, with awards being presented right through from the “Buckets”  to the under 14s.  Nippers President, Steve Skeers, emphasised that the name of the game was enjoyment, with fundamentals of surf lifesaving paramount. However, Steve was quick to point out that the Pambula Nippers swept the pool at the carnivals as far as individual and team branch championships were concerned, but it was Broulee’s superior numbers at the carnivals that saw them through as the branch’s champion club. Steve thanked everyone for their support during the season with particular mention made of the importance of water safety, and invited parents to consider attending the AGM later in the year.

Last Saturday afternoon the PSLSC Special Nippers had a mighty fat time on their penultimate visit to the beach for this season. The beach events were good, but the wade races were great, particularly with all the shenanigans that went on. The water temperature was terrific which had the nippers queuing up for the boogey boards and the “G” boards, and a fair bit of rugby tackling going on as well. Thanks again to all the helpers, particularly to a couple of our recent Wambiri graduates, for coming along to assist. Next Saturday will be the final Saturday of the season, and Michele would be pleased to see all helpers from the season present for the afternoon.

The PSLSC social evenings have proved very popular with members and guests on the regular Friday nights. These will continue this Friday 3 April, from 5:30 to 8:30 to which all members and guests are cordially invited. Please bring a plate. On Saturday evening, 18 April, the PSLSC will be holding their season wrap up party, complete with dinner. Think Italian, I’m told.  This will be a night not to miss, as our erstwhile Bar Manager, Annie, will be doing the cooking. Details are soon to be released.
Last Monday there was a meeting of members who have offered to help with organising the Presentation night. Catering, decoration  and a possible “theme” for the night were discussed.  The PSLSC newsletter will be forwarded  to all members prior to the presentation night and included with the newsletter will be the Awards Nomination form, which should be completed by all members, as this is the real guide to appropriate recognition of member’s seasonal contributions.

Last Thursday afternoon, two inland schools, Tallangatta and Bright, visited Pambula Beach for an afternoon at the sea. The PSLSC supplied a patrol for the afternoon from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Thanks to all those members who gave their time to conduct the patrol.

This Sunday,29 March, at the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, the PSLSC Nippers will bring the curtain down on another successful season. A season  in which the new Surf Education system was introduced, and implemented by the ubiquitous John Liston. A season  in which the PSLSC nippers carnival competitors came up trumps. A season which saw the introduction of a new leadership team who did a marvellous job with organising  the complete nippers programme. A full list of events has been organised for the final day, which will begin at 10:00 am with the Brats versus Adults Challenge, always a fun filled, it controversial event, with the ancient Trophy, bravely rescued from the old building by the club souvenir hunters, up for grabs. A full barbeque lunch will follow at $5:00 pp, or $20:00 per family, which will precede the seasons’ Presentations. The day will finish with an Under 15 disco in the clubhouse, to which all the seasons’ Nippers participants are invited.

On Saturday, the PSLSC Special Nippers made their annual trip to the Pambula River mouth for their activities. It was great to see some new faces, particularly those from the recent Wambiri Camp, assisting the traditional helpers. As usual everyone had a great time in the different environment, and it is pleasing to see how our Special Nippers now so readily adjust to a change in venue. This programme will continue for a few weeks yet, and the assistance of more active members would be appreciated. Please contact Michele Bootes for more information.

The PSLSC social night last Friday, attracted an excellent crowd to take in the  performance of local Pambula Beach band, PBGB. This group of accomplished musos played two sets which were a mixture of Blues based originals and covers, with some numbers going back to the 1930’s. Apparently the band will do encores when their repertoire is expanded. They will get their chance to do this on their promised return later in the year. The next Social Night will be Friday 3 April, from 5:30 to 8:30. Please bring a plate. On Saturday evening, 18 April, the PSLSC will be holding their season wrap up party, complete with dinner. Details are to be released.
PSLSC members attended  the Bega Valley Relay for Life last weekend, with their team fulfilling their duties and completing the course. This continues to be a great event, both as a fund raiser and a social gathering. Congratulations to the organising committee on their continuing success.

Members are advised that the PSLSC Presentation Night is set down for Saturday 23 May, at the PSLSC-- at last. Those members who received perpetual trophies last season are requested to return these perpetual shields and trophies to Tess or Paul Williams in Merimbula (Hertz/ Auto One) or Don Hay at 28 Jinjera Parade, Pambula Beach as soon as Possible.  Next Monday, 23rd March from 5.30pm at the clubhouse, there will be a meeting of members who have offered to help with organising the Presentation night, and  others who wish to be involved are most welcome. Items for discussion are catering, decoration , and possibly a “theme” for the night. Please contact Sandy Farrell for further information.
One problem we found with moving into the New Building was the amount of rubbish that was generated. Thankfully, the disposal of this waste was solved by Watts Waste who have provided the club with four wheelie bins and a regular waste collection service from our new clubhouse. Watts Waste has displayed  its’ generosity to the club following previous functions, ie, our Tradesman’s and Donor’s Night, and this timely offer will help keep the clubhouse in good order.

On Thursday afternoon, two inland schools, Tallangatta and Bright, will be visiting Pambula Beach for an afternoon at the sea. The club has been requested to supply a six member patrol for the afternoon from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Please contact Michele Bootes if you can assist. Michele will also be conducting a First Aid course at the PSLSC on Saturday, 28 March. Please contact her for more information.

Members of Pambula Surf Life Saving Clubs’ Under 14’s and under 15’s attended the thirteenth Wambiri Development and Leadership Camp in Tathra last weekend. The award winning Development and Leadership camp is designed to further develop leadership skills in our Branch cadets, who have undertaken a full season of patrols, and to reinforce Lifesaving skills for those candidates who were undergoing their Surf Rescue Certificate. A record number of twenty eight of our Branch’s Under 14s passed their Surf Rescue Certificate exam and nine attendees achieved their Leadership Certificates. These new SRC holders will now be added to their clubs Patrol roster and will begin patrols from this weekend. Congratulations to all the successful SRC candidates, particularly Beth, Jack, Emily, Daniel, Ellen, Tom and Molly, from PSLSC, as was Tyler who was awarded his Leadership Certificate. Thanks to the Trainers and Assessors, Dobbo, Peter, Jacqui, Graham and Frank and toJamie, the cook. Thanks also to Tathra SLSC for the use of their facilities during the weekend.

With their carnival commitments at an end, the Nippers seasonal programme has only a couple of Sundays remaining, and will wind up on Sunday 29 March with a full programme planned. As usual on the final Sunday, the Brats V Adults will be contested. It is anticipated that the Presentations will follow this exciting contest, and the day will be finalised with the U 15 Disco in the Clubhouse. Last Sunday, the nippers participated in a relaxed rotation, with the season winding down, and John Liston’s marathon education effort all but at an end. Thanks to all who assisted with the mornings’ activities. Next Sunday with the Relay for Life under way, it may be left to the Patrol to provide the bulk of the water safety. The Nippers would be extremely grateful to any active members who are not attending the Relay, who can come down to Nippers for the morning.

On Saturday, the PSLSC Special Nippers were at the beach again enjoying the surf  and participating enthusiastically in the beach events. This programme will continue for a few weeks yet, and the assistance of more active members would be appreciated. Please contact Michele Bootes.
PSLSC members and guests are cordially invited to attend the PSLSC social night this Friday evening, 20’th March, from 5:30 pm until 8:30pm. Featured on the evening is the towns’ band. Well, that’s not exactly the town  band , but the Pambula Beach Garage Band , which plays in a garage near you. This group of accomplished musos will play two sets for your enjoyment, which will be a mixture of mostly Blues based originals and covers, with some numbers going back to the 1930’s. Be early to get a seat as the band strikes up at six o’clock, and please bring a plate to share. Children, as usual, are most welcome.

PSLSC members are reminded that the Bega Valley Relay for Life will be held this weekend at the Pambula Sports Ground from Saturday morning. A s usual the club has entered  a team for the weekend. Ken Carman  is the PSLSCs’ Relay Captain and advises that it is not too late for club members to sign up for the Relay and to be included in the roster. Please contact Ken as soon as possible.

Members are advised that the PSLSC Presentation Night is set down for Saturday 23 May, at the PSLSC-- at last. Congratulations to popular patrolling members, Kelly and Matt Evans, on the recent birth of their baby daughter. Apparently Matt did a good impression of a cross country driver to get to the hospital, from Yass. Despite this, Mum and daughter did well.

When it’s all said and done, Pambula Surf Life Saving Club is just that, a Lifesaving Club. Last Friday at Bar Beach, two people, a father and four year old son, were caught in the out going tide and required assistance. Fortunately one of the PSLSC’s, newest bronze Medallion recruits, Louise Armstrong, was on hand, and hearing a mothers screams for help, observed the two people clinging to the green navigation buoy. Louise swam out to them to find the father desperately clinging to the buoy with one hand, and to his son on a boogey board with the other. Although the father’s strength was spent, Louise made the decision to send him back to shore under his own steam, while she clung to the marker buoy and untangled the lad from the boogey board’s leash. She was able to get assistance from a nearby board rider, and together they put the child on the board and  both of them then swam the boy to safety. Well done Loiuse.

The pile of rubble from last week is now a hole in the ground, surrounded by a fence. The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club New Building is now just the PSLSC, and as such, last Friday evening we successfully hosted our first fully fledged Social Night Thanks to our Bar Manager, Ann Smith, and husband Brian, who put on a great Curry Night for the occasion. Ann and Brian went to exorbitant lengths to provide adequate crockery and kitchen ware to provide for the better than expected crowd who were treated to a great night. A further Social Night is planned for Friday 27 March, to which all members and guests are invited. It is anticipated that musical items may be provided by the Pambula Beach Acoustic Band. Please bring a plate to share.

Congratulations   to Jacqui Keogh, Jo Thorpe, Tara Stone and Karyn Radford who, with sweep Gavin Granger, capped off a great year by establishing themselves at the top of the female masters rowing tree with gold and silver medallions. The crew claimed Gold at Broulee and followed this tremendous effort with Silver at the State championships recently. This was a great feat considering the pressure on the girls to produce the goods again. Well done.
Last Sunday, the PSLSC senior competitors set off for Tathra SLSC to compete in the Far South Coast Branch Championships. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves with the Vets from Broulee, Tathra and Pambula backing up in all events on the day. In the boats : Open Ladies. First – Ann Smith, Karyn  Radford, Jacqui Keogh, Tara  Stone, Jo Thorpe and Gavin Granger. Second  – Kym O’Halloran, Megan Quarmby,  Kirsty Byrne,  Mal Skitt,  Stewey Manson.
Open Mens. Third -  Chris Ryan, Glenn Pattie, Simon Byrne, Glen Vardanaga  and Stewey Manson.  Mens Vets. Second - Chris Ryan, Glenn Pattie, Simon Byrne, Glen Vardanaga and Stewey Manson. The ski paddlers, as usual, did very well with Potts Kelly, Andrew Stone, Wendy Wait and Jacqui Keogh, prominent, as did all in the water events though we were a bit skinny on the beach. A full schedule of the carnival placings can be found on the PSLSC website.

With their carnival commitments at an end, the Nippers seasonal programme has only a couple of Sundays remaining, and will wind up on Sunday 29 March with a full programme planned. As usual on the final Sunday, the Brats V Adults will be contested. It is anticipated that the Presentations will follow this engaging activity, and the day will be finalised with the U 15 Disco in the Clubhouse. Last Sunday, the nippers carnival Ribbons were presented, and everyone had a good morning on the beach and in the water in testing conditions. Thanks to all who assisted with the mornings’ activities.

On Saturday, the PSLSC Special Nippers were at the beach again enjoying terrific surf conditions and participating enthusiastically in the beach events.  All of the nippers have shown great improvement in their team activities and many, too, have displayed greater confidence in the water, particularly in the use of water craft. This programme will continue for a few weeks yet, and the assistance of more active members would be appreciated. Thanks to the new BM people who came down to assist on Saturday for the first time.

PSLSC members are reminded that the Bega Valley Relay for Life will be held again this year at the Pambula Sports Ground on the weekend of the 21st – 22nd of March.
A s usual the club has entered  a team for the weekend. Members should contact Ken Carman for more information .

It seemed rather sad to see a pile of rubble where the old Pambula Surf Life Saving Club used to be. But when you’re looking down from the PSLSC New Building, the whole thing takes on a different perspective. There is now a full realisation that, finally, the New Building is what we have. A feeling of relief, perhaps. This Friday evening, to coincide with the Day of Demolition, the Social Committee will be hosting a Curry Night at the PSLSC from 5:30pm to8:30pm, with dinner served at 6:30pm.  All Members and Guests are invited to attend, and at $16:00 pp, there will be a choice of two dishes. Please contact Ann Smith before Thursday 5 March with numbers, to assist with catering, on email : mfsr@acr.net.au, or phone 64954037. The wearing of traditional Indian dress is encouraged.

Probably the highlight of the weekend was the Junior Surf Carnival at the Moruya SLSC on Sunday. On a slightly overcast morning, once again the Carnival got away, close to time, with the March Past, and once again the teams paraded without the traditional music. However it was universally agreed that, with their “Left, Rights”, the six teams have never marched better. This began a great day of fine competition with the Branch Championships up for grabs. The All Age Relay provided the usual degree of excitement with the PSLSC teams dominating, as they did with the majority of the beach events. The water events also proved entertaining and exciting with a very testing surf running. PSLSC Junior President, Steve Skeers, is extremely pleased with his teams performance, indicating that all his competitors continually put their hands up during the season for the good of the club, and  he is confident of a positive showing when the Branch Championships are announced. Thanks to all competitors, parents, water safety officers and officials who made the trip to Moruya, particularly the officials, who carted the gear trailer up and back.

This Sunday the Tathra SLSC will host the Senior Branch Championship Carnival.
This carnival will have a full program with the boats getting away at 8:30 am  and the craft scheduled for 9:30 am. All PSLSC competitors should contact team co-ordinator, David Prowse, with regard to the Carnival Entry Form, which must be with the carnival recorder before 9:00am.

Last Saturday, the PSLSC Special Nippers enjoyed another afternoon at the beach. This season we have seen unprecedented  numbers of nippers attending these sessions, and it is interesting to see how the senior nippers, in particular, now  tend to group together. All of the nippers have shown great improvement in their team  activities and their understanding of the various rules. Many, too, have displayed greater confidence in the water, particularly in the use of water craft. This programme will continue for a few weeks yet, and the assistance of more active members would be appreciated.

PSLSC members are reminded that the Bega Valley Relay for Life will be held again this year at the Pambula Sports Ground on the weekend of the 21st – 22nd of March.
A s usual the club has entered  a team for the weekend. Members should contact Ken Carman for more information .

Finally, the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Nippers arrived for their activities to an excellent day at the beach. Warm, clear, water, and an even wave was enough to entice the most hesitant of nippers into the surf. Games on the beach, practice for the forthcoming carnival, and plenty of competitive and leisurely swimming was brought to a sudden halt with the sound of the shark alarm, politically now known as the Emergency Evacuation Alarm. Patrolling lifesavers were advised of a suspected shark sighting, so quickly sounded the alarm and sent the IRB in vain pursuit of the offending animal. Although no shark was sited, the occasion provided plenty of excitement for the nippers and attendant parents, not to mention a few ski paddlers, Bronze Medallion candidates and the water safety officers. Thanks to all who assisted with the activities during the morning. The nippers can now concentrate on Sundays’ Junior carnival at Moruya, which is gazetted as the Junior Branch Championship carnival. Clubs should be aware that the cancelled team event from the last carnival, the Board Rescue, may be included in this carnival, depending on time and conditions. It is also intended that the Buchanan Relay will be held for the Under8s, 9s and 10s, depending on the availability of Under 8s. Because of the carnival, there will be no nippers’ activities this Sunday, but they will resume at Pambula Beach on Sunday 8 March, which is also the date of the Senior Branch Championship Carnival at Tathra SLSC.

The PSLSC Special Nippers programme continues to pick up pace as the season progresses, it also continues to pick up more nippers. Unfortunately, this popularity presents its own problems. The Special Nippers programme is essentially a one on one programme, but of late it is struggling to maintain the correct ratio of carers to nippers. The problem has been solved to some degree by the generosity of regular active seniors and cadets, but cannot afford to have any absent at all. There have been various suggestions of how to overcome this problem, but the best solution is to have the assistance of more active members. No special training is needed, just a willingness to have a bit of fun for an hour on Saturday afternoons. Please contact Michele Bootes, who is beside herself with anxiety about the whole thing, should you consider taking part in this programme.

With the site fence securely surrounding it, it is with mixed emotions that we finally see the demolition of the old PSLSC club house is well under way. The roof tiles have been removed, and  it won’t be long before the old clubhouse building is no more. Although this building holds many memories for a lot of Club and community members, its removal is now imminent. However, the area on which it is situated will be revegetated and turned back into a dunal recreation area which will incorporate a viewing platform.

Last Friday’s games and social night at the PSLSC was declared a great success, with the finals going down to an exciting playoff.  The next designated social night will be on Friday, 6 March and will be in the form of a curry night. Members and guests are encouraged to attend.

The Merimbula Rotary Club is holding its 40th Anniversary Ball this Saturday night at Club Sapphire in support of the Relay for Life. Members please book for the PSLSC table. The Bega Valley Relay for Life will be held again this year at the Pambula Sports Ground on the weekend of the 21st – 22nd of March.

The Sponsors of the Week are Merimbula Security Systems in Merimbula, and John Regent, Floor and Wall Tiler, of Pambula.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Club senior carnival competitors travelled to Narooma on Saturday for the third of the FSC Branch  surf carnivals. True to form, Narooma turned on a fairly ordinary day, surf wise, which saw the first event of the day, the men’s surf boat race, called off after one heat. The ladies didn’t get away at all, the Pambula Ladies being the only crew to register. The skiers were the next to brave the conditions with much courage and skill being shown by all. Unfortunately the female skis found the conditions too rough. The Lifesaver Relay proved as exciting as expected with all disciplines truly tested in the conditions. The water activities were rounded off with the surf swim and the Ironman events, again with courage and skill to the forefront. The beach events appeared to be a welcome finish to the day’s competition. Thanks to all competitors who braved the conditions and to C1, C2 and Ray M who were the Club’s officials for the day. The final senior carnival, which will be for the senior Branch Championships, will be held at Tathra SLSC on 8 march.

This Sunday, the PSLSC Nippers return to their Sunday morning club activities following their weekend excursion to Narooma which turned out to be more of a beach carnival instead of a surf carnival. Due to very dangerous surf conditions, all water events were cancelled and the beach events were the play of the day. The day began with the iconic March Past, with all clubs putting their best foot forward despite the music being inaudible until the final wheeling mark. It remains a supurb spectacle. The strength of the carnival was clearly demonstrated by the number of teams in the All Age Relay which required two heats. PSLSC took out the Relay, with their other two teams also finishing in the points. With the water events cancelled, the flag and sprint areas were scenes of constant excitement as teams and individuals battled for supremacy, urged on by their very vocal team mates. Thanks to the nippers and parents who attended the carnival, and also to the officials from PSLSC who   made the trip. The last Junior carnival for the season will be at Moruya on Sunday, 1 March, which is gazetted as the Junior Branch Championship carnival. Clubs should be aware that the cancelled team event from last Sunday, the Board Rescue, may be included in the carnival, depending on time and conditions. It is also intended that the Buchanan Relay will be held for the Under8s, 9s and 10s, depending on the availability of Under 8s.

Communications are an important part of what we do at PSLSC. To that effect, we very much appreciate the support of long time visitor to this area, Greg Sutcliffe, for his generous donation to assist with the purchase and installation of the club’s aerials and antennae. This obviously relieves the load on the local community and brings the PSLSC New Building and Community Centre closer to it’s completion.

The old club house has a site fence erected around it, ready for its demolition in the next week or two. Yes – the old building’s days are numbered, a week or two should do.  It is in its terminal phase. Palliative measures no longer apply. Although the building holds many memories for a lot of Club and community members, its removal is now necessary. However, the area on which it is situated will be revegetated and turned back into a dunal recreation area incorporating a viewing platform.
PSLSC members and guests are reminded of the sports and social night at the PSLSC from 5:30 pm. Please bring a plate to share.

The Sponsors of the Week are Merimbula RSL Club, and Carbon Copy Printing in Pambula.

All members of the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club congratulate the PSLSC Ladies Masters Surfboat crew who took out the Gold Medallion at last weekends Australian Rowers League Championships held at Broulee. This is a massive achievement considering the quality of the Australian wide competition. The crew of Tara Stone, Jo Thorpe, Karen Radford and Jacqui Keough have been training under sweep, Mark Butterworth who unfortunately was unable to take his place due to injury. The girls were then swept by the veterans ladies sweep, Gavin Granger. Throughout the heats, the PSLSC crew were runners up to the strong  Avalon SLSC crew, but pipped them at the post in the final. The PSLSC ladies Under 30’s team of novice rowers, in their first tournament, notched up a couple of thirds in their heats while both men’s teams also performed well in their respective divisions.

This weekend we will all be at Narooma for the double carnival and the Valentine’s Day Narooma Surf Club Social. The boaties will kick the Saturday senior carnival off at 1:00pm followed by the craft, swimming then beach events. The team event is the exciting Lifesaver Relay which contains all carnival disciplines. Saturday nights’ social, with RED as its theme, will be followed immediately with the Junior carnival  on Sunday morning. Club representatives and Officials will meet at 8:00 am; marshalling will be at 8:15 am, and the carnival will begin at 8:30 with the ever popular March Past. The team event for the carnival is the exacting Board Rescue. Competitors and Gear Stewards are advised that the Branch scrutineers will be attending the Narooma carnival and will scrutinise all competition craft. The remaining carnivals for the season are: Sunday 1 March, the Junior Branch Championships at the Moruya SLSC, and on Sunday 8 March, the Senior Branch Championships at the Tathra SLSC. Programmes for these carnivals will be released next week.

The PSLSC Special Nippers summer programme continued last Saturday in less than ideal conditions. However, the large number of nippers and helpers worked their way through their activities and had a great time in the water despite the sloppy surf. The Special Nipper programme is a great initiative of the PSLSC and active members who would like to assist with these activities should contact Michele Bootes. Special Nippers activities are held each Saturday from 12:45 to 2:00pm at the PSLSC.

On Sunday, the PSLSC Nippers were also very restricted in their water activities, but made the best of things with a morning of body surfing and deep water wades. The beach events took the shape of games and Mr. Liston had his hands full with the extended groups for theory. Thanks to all who pitched in to help during the morning, particularly the water safety people, and it was a tough introduction for our newest patrol captain, Karen Griffiths, who did a great job under extreme difficulties. Following Nipper activities, the Wambiri candidates were given their workbooks and assisted with the setting out of the training programme.

The largest Bronze Medallion squad for some years at the PSLSC, began their course last Friday evening at the New Building, and continued through to Sunday afternoon.  Club CTO, Michele Bootes has rostered on all the club’s Trainers to cater for this group. Active members who would like to assist with water based activities should contact Michele during the week.

The Sponsors of the Week are Kellow and Parbery, Accountants, in Merimbula and Arbies Bistro at the Bottom Pub in Pambula.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Club carnival competitors should note that Narooma will be hosting the next senior and junior carnivals on Saturday 14th February for the seniors and Sunday 15th February for the juniors. Narooma SLSC is renowned for its hospitality, and this carnival weekend will be no different. All carnival participants are invited to camp overnight at the Narooma SLSC and attend their Valentines Day Surf Club Social, following the Senior Carnival, which will have RED as its theme,   The Lifesaver Relay will be held at the senior carnival on Saturday afternoon. The team event for the Junior carnival is the Board Rescue.

Broulee Surfers SLSC will be hosting the Australian Rowers League Championships this weekend. We wish the PSLSC mens and ladies surf boat crews all the best, rowing in their various categories.

Now in its eighth season, the PSLSC Special Nippers began its summer programme last Saturday, at which a record number of nippers attended. This programme is one of the great SLS initiatives and active members who would like to assist with these activities should contact Michele Bootes. Special Nippers activities are held each Saturday from 12:45 to 2:00pm at the PSLSC

PSLSC Nippers took to the water last Sunday in what was a verychallenging surf and were on hand to witness the procedure to be followed when a duck is flipped. This delighted the group present, and the Ecclefechan Award was mentioned.  This then, may or may not, be a catalyst for some of our active parents to obtain their IRB certificate.

PSLSC CTO, Michele Bootes, advises that the next Bronze Medallion course will begin this Friday, from 6:00 pm , at the PSLSC New Building.  SLSA has impressed on trainers that the 400 metre pool swim is a prerequisite to all water activities associated with the Bronze Medallion and all fees are to be paid prior to the beginning of the course. Please contact Michele, phone 64953375, for further information.

PSLSC Club Captain has completed the final Patrol roster and patrol changes for the season which has been posted on the PSLSC’s  website and has been placed on the patrol room noticeboard. Members are asked to be aware of patrol transfers and to be   aware of their patrol responsibilities. Those who are unable to attend a patrol should endeavour to find a replacement and to inform their patrol captain.

There has been a promising response from U 14 candidates for this years Wambiri  Development Camp. All candidates will receive their information packages this week and are requested to see camp co-ordinator, Frank Davey, following Nippers on Sunday, barring any mishaps. Frank will explain what is required of each candidate prior to the camp.
With the ageing population in mind and realising the significance of 3 February 1959, The Day the Music Died, the PSLSC will be hosting a Tribute to Buddy Holly evening this Friday from 5:30 pm till 8:30 pm, to which all members and guests are invited. Please bring appropriate trivia, if you wish, and a plate to share.

The Sponsors of the Week are Club Sapphire in Merimbula and Gary Dien from Pambula Glass in Pambula.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Club carnival competitors should note that Narooma will be hosting the next senior and junior carnivals on Saturday 14th February for the seniors and Sunday 15th February for the juniors. Clubs will have received their carnival programmes before the end of the week. Narooma SLSC is renowned for its hospitality, and this carnival weekend will be no different. All carnival participants are invited to camp overnight at the Narooma SLSC and attend their Valentines Day Surf Club Social, which will have RED as its theme, following the Senior Carnival. As an added bonus, the Lifesaver Relay will be held at the senior carnival on Saturday afternoon. This event is always exciting to watch and having it at Narooma will be more so. The team event for the Junior carnival is the Board Rescue which, at Narooma, will also be a very exciting event.

Broulee Surfers SLSC will be hosting the Australian Rowers League Championships on the weekend of the 6/7/8th February 2009. This event attracts surf boat crews from around the country and is a great spectacle. The PSLSC surf boat fraternity are certain to have both men’s and woman’s crews competing in various categories.

PSLSC Nippers Under 14’s should note that the dates for the Wambiri Development Camp in Tathra have been set down for 13/14/15 March. All U14’s interested in this wonderful weekend should see Frank Davey after Nippers on Sunday for more information. It is vitally important that the names of those attending the Wambiri Camp are submitted as soon as possible as there is much preparation to be undertaken prior to the camp.

PSLSC Nippers continued with their programme last Sunday on a sunny day at the beach, though with a chilly breeze.Unfortunately, the designated duck driver rang in unwell and the backup drivers were at Kalaru. Thanks to Lief who took over the reigns for the whole session. The IRB is en integral part of water safety at nippers, as without an IRB in the water, the water activities cannot proceed. This, then, may be a catalyst for some of our active parents to obtain their IRB certificate.

PSLSC CTO, Michele Bootes, advises that the next Bronze Medallion course will begin on 6 February at the PSLSC New Building.  SLSA has impressed on trainers that the 400 metre pool swim is a prerequisite to all water activities associated with the Bronze Medallion and all fees are to be paid prior to the beginning of the course. Please contact Michele, phone 64953375, for further information.

PSLSC Club Captain reminds all patrolling members to be aware of their patrol responsibilities. Those who are unable to attend a patrol should endeavour to find a replacement and to inform their patrol captain. Patrol 6 were busy on Saturday afternoon with their choral group in fine form on a most inauspicious occasion, and the cook did a marvellous job with the cake.

Congratulations to the Sapphire Rock organising Committee for yet another superb musical event last Saturday evening. Thanks to the PSLSC volunteers who assisted with the erection, and subsequent demolition, of the giant stage at the Kalaru Racecourse on Thursday and Sunday.

The Sponsors of the Week are Club Sapphire in Merimbula and Sapphire Coast Doors in Pambula.

Last Sunday, a full patrol of lifesavers from Pambula Surf Life Saving Club travelled south to Mallacoota as a relief patrol for the local lifesavers. Mallacoota SLSC is a relatively young club with a limited number of active members, who have been over taxed with the great influx of  tourists this season. Fortunately the weather was fine   except for a persistent lazy breeze through the day. A good crowd attended the beach, and all PSLSC members enjoyed the experience of  patrolling at a different location. Everyone appreciated how fortunate we are to have the luxury of a clubhouse from which to operate at Pambula Beach. During the day patrol captain, Don Hay, took time to instruct local lifesavers in the use of the IRB, after attending mechanic, JE McGrath, finally got the machine up to speed. Shortly before the end of the patrol, the Ecclefechan Award received another nominee when the aspiring Canberra Raider, Keiran Carman, initiated the phone- a- rescue technique, which bears looking into. Thanks to all who took part in this venture, and thanks to the Mallacoota SLSC, for giving members of our club the opportunity to broaden their active outlook. PSLSC sees no reason why this cannot be a regular occurrence.

Meanwhile, the PSLSC patrols at Pambula Beach have been busy with good crowds at the beach and members being called out to utilise the IRB for several minor emergencies. Lifesavers are also pleased with the amount of questions being asked of the patrolling members regarding surf safety. In this regard, the PSLSC assistant CTO, Peter Bootes, conducted a Beach Safety Talk at the PSLSC New Building on Sunday afternoon, which was attended by more than fifty holiday makers. This talk gave families information on rips, tides, beach types, marine first aid, CPR and signs. Peter also gave a description of some of our beautiful local beaches including dangers of which they should be aware. The course was offered to the guests of the Holiday Hub who also took the opportunity to inspect the new clubhouse. The afternoon concluded with the drawing of a raffle donated by the Holiday Hub Caravan Park.  The lucky winner received  a $100 discount on their next holiday at the Holiday Hub.

Pambula SLSC members welcome back to the fold from her stint in Canada, popular active member, Vice Club Captain, member of Clowns Incorporated, T&A,  raffler and boat rower extraordinaire, Miss Quarmby. True to form, Megan put in an appearance at Friday’s social night, patrolled on Saturday afternoon and fitted in her proficiency. Along with Michele Bootes, Megan also assisted Peter Bootes with his presentation on Sunday afternoon.

PSLSC Nippers Under 14’s should note that the dates for the Wambiri Development Camp in Tathra have been set down for 13/14/15 March. All U14’s interested in this wonderful weekend  should see Frank Davey after Nippers on Sunday for more information.

PSLSC CTO, Michele Bootes, advises that the next Bronze Medallion course will begin in late January or early February, depending on applicants.  SLSA  has impressed on trainers that the 400 metre pool swim is a prerequisite to all water activities associated with the Bronze Medallion. Please contact Michele, phone 64953375, for further information.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Club hosted the first of the Far South Coast Branch carnivals last weekend. This was a double carnival, with the Seniors on Saturday and Juniors on Sunday, but what a contrast. Without boats, the Senior carnival got away at 2:00 pm, right in the teeth of a howling gale. However, the forty or so brave souls present decided to continue on, with the team events being disregarded. Despite the hair raising conditions there were some great battles fought on the ocean with skis, boards and bodies. A huge vote of thanks should go to Don Hay and Ken Carman who spent seven hours on the ocean, laying the cans and providing the all important water safety for the duration of the carnival. Thanks also to our PSLSC officials, Ray, Margie, Gavin and Frank for their all day effort, and the Tathra SLSC’s Tony and Judy Rettke for looking after the beach events at he end of the day. We were all both pleased and surprised at the attendance of FSC Branch President, Dave Pheeney, who has not been in the best of health lately. Dave took his place as designated Carnival Referee and conducted affairs from the comfort of the PSLSC New Building Auditorium. We all wish we’d have been up there with him.

On the strength of Saturdays’ performance, the Nippers decided early in the piece to move their Sunday carnival to their alternate venue, Merimbula Main Beach, where the water was pristine and the weather bright and sunny. Following the usual complications associated with switching venues, the carnival got away all but on time, which is a tribute to the new PSLSC nippers committee who were willing workers to get the show up and running. Thanks to Don Hay (again) and Peter Bootes, who left their Sunday beds early to shift the cans 6Km to Merimbula for the carnival start. The large crowd present were treated to a great exhibition of nipper competition, both in the water and on the beach, with six of the seven branch clubs represented and a small contingent of nippers from Bulli SLSC attended to fill out the compliment. The large Broulee army were pushed all the way by a very persistent PSLSC contingent, with all clubs having a satisfying day. Thanks to the fourteen officials for their efforts on Sunday, particularly Kerry Parbery, who coordinated the recording at both carnivals. Thanks, as always, to all the water safety people, who continue to do a mighty job year in and year out. Results for both carnivals will be released during the week.

Active members who might be interested in patrolling at Mallacoota this Sunday from !0:00 am to 5:00pm  should contact Ken Carman to enable him to co-ordinate the patrols. Ken would like to have enough active members to roster two patrols for the day to break up the seven hour patrol. There are plenty of camp sites available for those who would like to stay on the Saturday night. Alternatively, Ken will coordinate travel to Mallacoota on the Sunday.

PSLSC CTO, Michele Bootes, advises that the next Bronze Medallion course will begin in late January or early February, depending on applicants. SLSA  has impressed on trainers that the 400 metre pool swim is a prerequisite to all water activities associated with the Bronze Medallion. Pambula Surf Life Saving Club’s Surf Patrol has set up a first for the club in providing an all female patrol on Boxing Day. The patrol was led by Nicky Granger who did a great job on a fairly busy afternoon. Following a report of a possible shark sighting, Nicky and Karen manned the IRB and did a run up and down the beach while Ann, Megan, Marci and Michele maintained watch over the numerous holiday makers who were enjoying some unusually warm water. Active members on duty for Christmas Day were very appreciative of the large number of people who offered their thanks to the Lifesavers for giving up their time to patrol on Christmas Day.

The club PSLSC I has accepted a request for our members to relieve Mallacoota SLSC members on Sunday 18th January for that days’ patrol, 10:00am – 5:00pm.   Active members who might be interested in this venture please contact Ken Carman to enable him to co-ordinate the patrols. Ken would like to have enough active members to roster two patrols for the day to break up the seven hour patrol. There are plenty of camp sites available for those who would like to stay on the Saturday night. Alternatively, Ken will coordinate travel to Mallacoota on the Sunday.

Thanks to Ann Smith, Michele Bootes, Kym O’Halloran, Bart McPherson, Kieren & Cassie Carman, Tony Shaw and Rick and Sandy Farrell provide a patrol for St Joseph’s School, Bombala on 16th December.  26 children, accompanied by 10 adults, came down to spend a few hours at the beach for their end-of-year excursion and it is fair to say that the kids made the most of their time in the surf.

The next FSC Branch carnival is a two day carnival here at Pambula Beach this weekend, 10/11th January.  The seniors will compete on Saturday afternoon starting at 1pm. There will be no boats at this carnival as there is another round of the South Boat series on this weekend. The junior carnival will start at 8.30am on the Sunday morning although Nippers should be at the clubhouse before 8:00 am. Nipper parents are requested to be at the beach at 6:00 am to assist with setting up the beach for the carnival. Nipper members will also be required to assist with various duties such as recording, catering etc. This will be a great opportunity for all qualified members to compete for their club.

The New Year’s Day Breakfast on the Beach proved a great success with the food running out before our advertised finish time. Thanks to the host of volunteers who turned out to help on the morning. They were pleased with the many favourable comments received from the general public who attended in great numbers to support the occasion. . Congratulations to Tara Stone, Chris Ryan and Tess Williams for organising and promoting this popular fundraiser.

The boat rowers remain in the news with congratulations to Simon Byrne, who takes over as Boat Captain from an overworked Andrew Holt, and to Chris Ryan who has been elected as Vice Boat Captain.

PSLSC CTO, Michele Bootes, advises that she is conducting two Defibrillation   courses, on the 13th and 14th January from 6pm at the PSLSC New Building. These courses are available to members and non members. The next Bronze Medallion course will begin in late January or early February, depending on applicants. Please contact Michele, phone 64953375.

PSLSC Gear Steward, Les Dirou, advises that surplus, if slightly outmoded, skis and boards will be available for purchase on Saturday and Sunday at the carnival.

The PSLSC Management Committee wishes all members, sponsors, the local community and visitors a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Club’s Surf Patrol has set up a first for the club, and probably the nation, by providing an all female patrol for this Boxing Day. The patrol was led by Nicky Granger who did a great job on a fairly busy afternoon. Several children had to be assisted out of some deep holes that had formed between the two sand bars. After a report of a possible shark sighting Nicky and Karen manned the IRB and did a run up and down the beach while Ann, Megan, Marci and Michele maintained watch over the numerous holiday makers who were enjoying some unusually warm water. Active members on duty for Christmas Day were very appreciative of the large number of people who offered their thanks to the Lifesavers for giving up their time to patrol on Christmas Day.

Nippers Committee would like to remind members that the Nippers activities resume on Sunday, 4 January, after New Year’s Day. Those Nippers with the carnival proficiency will be able to practise for the Pambula Carnival on 11 January. Nippers without this proficiency who would like to compete are able to complete their proficiency swim at the local pools. Don’t forget to get your time slip for the Age Manager. The carnival program will be released before the New Year. This year, U 14 SRC holders will be able to compete on long boards in individual events, but will not be able to compete in individual events on the Nipper 2 metre boards at the same carnival. The team events will be on short boards only. The team event for the Pambula carnival will be the Board Relay. Families will be able to register for Nippers at Nippers activities on any Sunday morning at the PSLSC. Advice on Proficiency swims will be given on registration.

The club PSLSC I has accepted a request for our members to relieve Mallacoota SLSC members on Sunday 18th January for that days patrol. Mallacoota SLSC have only have about 6 senior and several cadets and are unable to supply a patrol on that weekend. A few members have indicated that they might like to make a weekend of it. If any active members are interested in this venture, please contact Ken Carman to enable him to co-ordinate the patrols.

The next FSC Branch carnival is a two day carnival here at Pambula on the weekend of the 10/11th January.  The seniors will compete on Saturday afternoon starting at 1pm.   There will be no boats at this carnival as there is another round of the South Boat series on this weekend.   The junior carnival will start at 8.30am on the Sunday morning. This will be a great opportunity for all qualified members to compete for their club.

Locals and visitors alike will be pleased to note that the PSLSC Breakfast on the Beach has been resurrected for 2009 New Years Day. Under the control of Tara Stone’s Boat Rowers, a full breakfast of Bacon, Eggs, Toast, Tea or Coffee and Orange Juice will be offered on the lawn  in front of the New Clubhouse, from 8:00am until 11:00 am, for a very reasonable $8:00 for adults and $5:00 for children. Boat rowers and members who can assist with this venture should contact Tara, email:taragrant77@hotmail.com or mobile no: 0400 044 539 for more information.

Pambula Surf Life Saving Club Active members are advised to report to the patrol room in the New Building for patrols. All essential patrol equipment is located on the new patrol trailer which is also housed in the new Building. PSLSC members have again been active during out of patrol hours with two IRB calls out on consecutive weekdays to incidents at Merimbula’s Bar Beach and Eden’s Aslings Beach.  Nippers Committee would like to remind members that the Nippers activities resume on Sunday, 4 January, after New Year’s Day. Those Nippers with the carnival proficiency will be able to practise for the Pambula Carnival on 11 January.

Now the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club and Community Centre New Building has finally been opened, the huge task of making the building operational is under way. Last week, and particularly during the weekend , there has been feverish activity with the relocation of equipment between the old clubhouse and the New Building . Towards the end of Sunday afternoon, Karen Griffiths’ First Aid room accessaries were relocated and the patrol room was made operational. The old Radio Room has been laid bare and the first patrol to operate from the New Building took place on Sunday. All active members are now advised to report to the patrol room in the New Building for patrols. All essential patrol equipment is located on the new patrol trailer which is also housed in the new Building.

The first senior carnival for the season was at Batemans Bay on Sunday. It turned out to be a sunny day with some good competition between the Pambula, Tathra and Broulee.  It was good to see all the Masters there as well as a good turn up of juniors, approximately100 competitors in all. A huge day of activities is planned to which the whole community is invited. From 10:00 o’clock in the morning until 3:00 o’clock in the after noon, the New Building will be open for inspection. PSLSC personal will be on hand to assist with information on the construction of the building and the proposed uses to which it can be put. The grounds surrounding the New Building will be a hive of activity with stalls, games, bands and all kinds of entertainment to keep the crowd amused. The official opening of this phenomenal community based building will take place at 1:00 pm. We have been assured that the official speeches will be kept to a minimum and those speeches will have a very short time limit. We will all have to wait for the moment to see who has the honour of opening this great facility. From 6:30 pm. an invitation only, official dinner party will be held for members and major sponsors in the Club’s auditorium. This is to celebrate the opening of the building and the work and time that has gone into its construction. Last Saturday evening a pre official opening function was held at the New Building to which all trades people, suppliers and sponsors who participated in the construction of the building were invited.  It was very pleasing to see a great number of these people attend what was a most agreeable evening.

The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club and Community Centre New Building had its first serious workout on Sunday morning when the PSLSC’s Nippers began their activities for the season. Nippers President, Steve Skeers, welcomed all to the new season on the grass apron in front of the club, making a great picture, he then handed out the jobs. The Nippers went into their rotation, the Run-Swim-Run taking centre stage, with most nippers showing a lot of form this early in the season. The barbequed sausages and salad following the activities were a great hit and the sand and water drenched change rooms and corridors really gave the place a surf club feel. Then we had to clean it up. The Nippers Committee would like to thank everyone who contributed to a successful, if slightly chaotic, opening morning .Things are looking good for the new season. Families who could not attend the designated Registration and Proficiency day will be able to register at Nippers activities on any Sunday morning at the PSLSC. Advise on Proficiency swims will be given on registration.

The PSLSC’s Special Nippers had a change of venue this month when the activities were taken to Spencer Park in Merimbula.  Innovative games of bucket flags, crawl ball and French cricket kept everyone occupied and entertained for the whole session. As usual, more active members are always required to assist with these activities. Please contact Michele for more information.
